Stupid and Simplistic
Reviewed: 04-17-25
AI reader is always a net negative. The story was predictable and overly simplistic. I got the impression that that this series was a bit of therapy for the author’s TDA. I got through about 3 hours before I got completely disgusted by it. Basically, the plot is that Trump starts zombie apocalypse to be dictator for life while blaming everything on illegal aliens. A brave illegal alien tries to thwart him. Yawn

Story
I ran from home to escape heartbreak, only to deliver myself into the hands of a wolf. Henry Wolf, that is. Heir to a luxury hotel chain, infamous playboy, arrogant bastard...and my new boss. Why he wants me, Abbi Mitchell - a girl who lacks experience on every front that would matter to him - as his personal assistant, I cannot fathom, especially when I keep messing up in the most spectacular way. Did I already mention he's a bastard? A beautiful, moody one, who's quick to demand, slow to apologize. And toying with me every chance he gets.

Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

I am a little surprised to see so many glowing reviews. This is supposed to be the story of a young adult who takes on the care of his younger brother — only the brother seems one dimensional and a distraction from the real storyline which appears to be the author’s inability to understand why he isn’t the center of everyone’s universe. He’s suffered, after all. He’s totally aware of his attempt to emotionally manipulate society at large and is either mocking himself or mocking everyone else about it.
This is one of those book club selections that I had to force myself to finish

No one survived the last battle unscathed. Flint is angry at the world, Jaxon is turning into something I don't recognize, and Hudson has put up a wall I'm not sure I'll ever break through. Now war is coming, and we're not ready. We're going to need an army to have any hope of winning. But first, there are questions about my ancestors that need answers. Answers that might just reveal who the real monster is among us. And that's saying something in a world filled with bloodthirsty vampires, immortal gargoyles, and an ancient battle between two gods.

I think my interest in this series just died. I don’t mind a little virtue signaling. It’s pretty much a requirement in YA literature these days, but this one went over the top with the plural pronouns for single people. Sorry, but the pretentious nature of it was a turn off
