Brings It All Back
Reviewed: 11-11-22
There were so many awful events in Trump's term that I think I forgot half of them. This book brought it all back and reminded me how scared I was day to day about what he was going to do to serve himself and harm our country. Sometimes I had to quit listening because it was too stressful to re-live the terror of Trump's term.

Story
The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

The Sackler family is the personification of evil.

The story of the Sackler family and their marketing of oxycontin is so horrible and depressing and maddening that I had to stop listening to the book for a bit to collect myself. But we all need to know the details. The audiobook performance is outstanding, also.

Anyone Remember J. Edgar Hoover?
Reviewed: 05-11-21
How can a discussion of the FBI not include J. Edgar Hoover and his dishonest activities, including the secret files he compiled by spying on Americans? The discussion of the FBI and The FBI Way was interesting but incomplete. To truly understand The FBI Way, it is important to understand how an organization that espouses honesty in all things could have as their leader for 37 years a man whose behavior was deeply dishonest.

Story
On a rainy winter night, James Bowden Jr. left his mother’s house in Roxbury after a visit. As he guided his Buick out of his parking spot, an unmarked police car suddenly blocked his path. Two undercover officers sprang out, running toward his car. Shots were fired, and Bowden slumped over the wheel. Moments later, he was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

When will the killing and lying end?

George Floyd's story 40+ years ago. Almost nothing has changed. Heartbreaking. This is the story of James Bowden who was murdered by the Boston police. Highly recommend, especially the audiobook read by the author and member of the legal team who obtained justice for Patricia Bowden and her 2 children.

Wandering story.

What I learned from reading the book could fit in 3 or so chapters. The rest of the material was just filling up space until another tidbit of information surfaced. I will always look at pitchers differently now.
