What a masterpiece of literature- the writing is pure gold. Filled with imagination and elegance. And the main reader was totally up to the challenge. His voice draws one in and holds you captive. An absolute work of art. Bravo!

Story
Parents whose adult children have cut off contact wonder: How did this happen? Where did I go wrong? What happened to my loving child? Over time, holidays, birthdays, and even the birth of grandchildren may pass in silence. Anguish may turn into anger. While time, in and of itself, does not necessarily heal, actions do, and while every estrangement includes situation-specific variables, there are practical, effective, and universal techniques for understanding and healing these not-uncommon breaches.

Story
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Extraordinary Reader/Mesmerizing Story
Reviewed: 06-05-23
I was spellbound by the beautiful narration, and the thoughtful, eloquent prose that Maggie O’Farrell writes so so artfully. I was transported to another time and place and found it hard to turn off the story to get back to my own life at times. It was like being in the presence of a trusted friend. O’Farrell is truly a gifted writer and this is my second book of hers- the first was The Marriage Portrait. The one issue I had with both books was that I feel sometimes she over-writes and becomes repetitive telling us the same thing over and over in different words. While I recognize the importance of dealing with Agnes‘s grief, I also felt that I had had enough of it, and had a hard time making my way to the end of those chapters. It’s also a bit strange that she writes in these two books about two youths who have died. Kind of morbid. Yet she weaves incredible plots filled with such detail you are in the room with all of her characters.
I highly recommend both books! And both readers are extraordinary!!! Ell Potter was not a reader - she was an actress playing every part magnificently! Kudos! Bravo! Thank you!

Story
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

One of the best audio tellings I’ve ever read
Reviewed: 04-21-23
The narrator of this audiobook is absolutely exceptional. It was a joy to listen to her reading, which felt more like a performance than listening to someone read a literary text. While others have complained about the lengthy to descriptions, I found them eloquent and captivating. I was there in the room with these people. The book transported me to another time and place. I’m just so sorry that it is based on a true set of circumstances, and that women were forced to live this way. Frightening to think what our world is coming to now with women expected to have babies, regardless of their own life ambitions. Just like we were back in renaissance times. Sigh. Still, this was an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

The story is really predictable - we’ve heard it all before. But Suzanne Leary creates a very delightful world that is pleasant to inhabit for a while and the reader mails each character so beautifully you can’t help but enjoy the visit. All in all a nice distraction from the heaviness of the world these days.

English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery.

One of the best audio reads I’ve ever heard
Reviewed: 01-26-22
Simon Vance has mastered these characters with unbelievable finesse - I can’t get over how seamlessly he bounced between the different voices and accents of the characters. I wish the story had been a bit more compelling in the end. It seemed to be building to a far greater climax than we got. Lily King is a gifted writer - she paints such a vivid picture of the world she creates. There was so much to take in as a reader! But the overarching story was a bit disappointing. I thought it was building to something far greater than where it went. All the elements for greatness were there but sadly I didn’t feel it achieved that.

Beautiful telling of a love story - birth with her husband and the city of light. The reader has a lovely voice and though her command of French was sorely lacking I was too drawn into the narrative to stop listening. Thank you, Kati Marton for sharing such an intimate journey with us.
