About this listen

The landmark new novel from award-winning author Claire Keegan

It is 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man, faces into his busiest season. Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, Bill makes a discovery that forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church.

Already an international best seller, Small Things Like These is a deeply affecting story of hope, quiet heroism, and empathy from one of our most critically lauded and iconic writers.

What a gem of a story with a reminder we all can use about what matters. Narrator is spot on.

Thought-provoking novella

A glimpse into the life of a family man who’s life could’ve taken a very different turn and his bravery for an act of immense kindness toward a young woman living in the confines of the Magdalene laundry.
Difficult to believe this takes place in 1985.
Well worth the time to either listen to or read.

Beautifully read

The reader brought the story alive and the story was poetry. Short but so powerful.

Beautiful strong tale

A wonderful telling of a deep story of a life in Ireland under the ubiquitously oppressive time in which the population was subject to the Catholic Church and the tale of the response of one good person.

The depth of compassion

Claire Keegan puts the reader quickly in the shoes of her character who has escaped the jaws of institutional charity and thanks to the generosity of his mother’s employer grows into a respectable, upright member of society. He takes us on his journey of weighing the risks of doing what he knows is the right thing to do but will bring potentially destructive consequences for him, his business and most of all for his beloved family. A must read!

A short story about the depth of simple goodness

The narration was great. The story relatable and reflective. I feel like there are many similarities in Irish stories, but they also serve as a reminder that simple understanding and kindness could make us all better people

Well written and well narrated. While short you are left with much to think about

This makes one consider the difference between right and wrong and the hypocrisy that rigid beliefs of right and wrong can foster.
