Weirdly sexist - takes away from the writing
Reviewed: 01-08-25
As the second book in this series, I thought maybe the overstated sexism would start to dissolve as the character adapts. Unfortunately, this book too has an unusual focus on sexist vision. All of the female characters are a sum of their physical appearance and all of the men are prisoners to constant sexual preoccupation. It seems like the writer has actual skill but the sexual obsession makes me feel like I'm listening to the musings of a dirty old man. Hearing the words in the the beautiful Scottish accent also gives the impression that Scottish people are brutish, vulgar people. I'll not continue to read this series.

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Fantastic, gritty, short story

Really evokes 1970s New York. Not the violence/gore descriptions common today but lots of alcoholism and corruption!
I genuinely enjoyed listening to this short story. Narrator was perfect!

This is the same story told from 5 different perspectives, so if you’re not patient, you may not like it. For me, the twists and turns were fascinating and held my interest. Performers were exceptional. It’s been a long time since I’ve read something truly original. I highly recommend!

Needs more mystery, less romance
Reviewed: 10-12-22
I like a pseudo supernatural mystery story but this particular one is 20% mystery, 40% GRAPHIC sexual matter and 40% romance novel. Also, the narrator’s imitation of an Appalachian accent is insulting and inaccurate. I couldn’t listen to it in the car as it is too explicit.

Story
On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene. Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

Better than most

This is a standard police procedural-type story with a few twists and a female protagonist! I appreciate that the detective is fully capable without a background love relationship to make her interesting. I hate that the author employed the old “boss always yelling at detective” trope. Overall, a good read.
