About this listen

The first in an intelligent, multi-layered crime series featuring DI Eva Harris.

A vicious killer on the loose, a traitor on the team - and a past that’s catching up with her.

Can DI Harris see the truth before it’s too late?

An expert killer who takes his victims’ eyes - can DI Harris see clearly enough to uncover the truth?

On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene.

Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

But Harris’s desperate desire to uncover the truth is complicated by her secret mission to find corruption at the heart of the police. Who can she trust in her own team? Harris is also hiding a secret past of her own - can she find the killer and learn who to depend on, before her dark history catches up with her?

Phenomenal

The book starts of on fire, setting the tone and pace for the rest of the book. It is beautifully descriptive throughout the whole book. The occasional view from the victims was perfectly woven into the stories and gave the the following scenes a dark twist I enjoyed.
I would consider myself an amateur sleuth (didn’t read all those Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books for nothing) and while I was able to develop some theories the different elements of this story both the backstory and current being woven together laid a web that was extremely compelling and very hard to unravel with any certainty I was following the right thread.
I would love to see this picked up by the BBC, a perfect mix of Luther and Endeavor vibes but with a female lead. I look forward to a sequel, I am not done reading DI Eva Harris yet.

Loved it

I read a lot of mystery/thrillers, and I like to come out with a quick blurb if one really takes me in like this one did! I was engaged from beginning to end. This was a random pick from Audible’s “suggested for you,” and I’m happy I took the gamble.

I loved this story’s complexities and allusions that depended on some knowledge of art (and art history). A great incorporation of tradition and new tech: a generational clash! Smart, funny, suspenseful, well-written.

20/20 is a 20-Star Book!

20/20 is a 20-Star Book!

Yes, it was that good. If you enjoy over-the-top British crime/police procedural medical thrillers, this book is for you.

DI Eva Harris is a tough and feisty DI with class, sass, brilliance, a compelling backstory..... and an uncanny ability to sense danger and escape death.

And she's the superhero in Carl Goodman's two expertly-crafted, action-packed medical thrillers "20/20" and "Lifesign".

Both books were extremely fast-paced with strong characterizations and multiple plot twists.

Both books also showcased superb police procedurals that kept me on edge from beginning to end.

Both books were read by Louise Brealey, who did an outstanding job with the narration. The books, however, would have benefited from two narrators(male and female) for the male POV portions of the books.

Trigger warnings: graphic, gruesome, gory body parts.

These were my first books by author Mark Goodman and I look forward to listening to future books by this talented author.

struggle to finish

I didn't find this book engaging. the rampant use of language was unnecessary and the story behind the story was too convoluted to follow until it was finally explained in the last 4 minutes. only finished it because I made myself.

ENTERTAINING AND MASTERFUL TALE!

Well-written and played out story about a Cop on the Edge who keeps most of her perspective through the end! Tense and mesmerizing, albeit a bit slow at times. Still a fine story with a satisfying conclusion - Wouldn't mind hearing more! GRADE: A

EXCELLENT so far

Wonderful narrator--her voice is sooo pretty, and character differentiation is excellent. A little gory but done in good taste. A little swearing but at the most understandable places. (But swearing is never necessary IMO) Character development excellent and interesting. Great. And I'm only at the beginning. Thanks for this "free" book Audible. And there is a Book 2 too!

Finished--this was an intelligent book. The character development excellent. Some parts I skipped due to too descriptive gore. But the plot was somewhat one-dimensional--only work related. Never got a glimpse of the characters' present day personal life.

One star off for swearing.

Enjoyable for a book 1

I liked a lot about this book, but there were no great surprises. The protagonist had an annoying habit of putting herself into life threatening dilemmas that would have been easily avoided, but it was fun seeing her getting out of them.

I will try the second in the series to see how the author and her inspector have grown.
