Interesting read
Reviewed: 09-27-23
I don't recall hearing about Israel Keyes so the story held my attention throughout. I found the narrator to be a bit flat and non-reactive to the material she was reading. It wasn't the nail-biter book I thought it could have been. The last 5 chapters could have been condensed, as the information contained therein did not add anything material to the story after Keyes' death.

Ms. Dunne narration was excellent. The book gives an insight to how Joseph & Rose Kennedys viewed Rosemary's inabilities, instead of appreciating her abilities, causing her even greater harm. Had it not been for Joseph's political ambitions, it is possible that Rosemary could have lived a very happy and rewarding life within the Kennedy clan.

Story
As an undergraduate, Michele Filgate started writing an essay about being abused by her stepfather. It took her more than a decade to realize that she was actually trying to write about how this affected her relationship with her mother. When it was finally published, the essay went viral, shared on social media by Anne Lamott, Rebecca Solnit, and many others. This gave Filgate an idea, and the resulting anthology offers a candid look at our relationships with our mothers.

Story
When Ann Woodward shot her husband, banking heir Billy Woodward, in the middle of the night in 1955, her life changed forever. Though she claimed she thought he was a prowler, few believed the woman who had risen from charismatic showgirl to popular socialite. Everyone had something to say about the scorching scandal afflicting one of the most rich and famous families of New York City, but no one was more obsessed with the tale than Truman Capote.

Reviewed: 01-13-23
I was never impressed with Truman Capote and this book substantiated my opinion of the man. My distain for him has been replaced with pity. Like a person who has experienced a near fatal accident, his life experiences ravaged his sense of value for himself as well as others. I found this book to be well written, well narrated, and delivered information about the Woodward murder to be fascinating.

Story
1936 was a great year for the movie industry - the financial setbacks of the Great Depression were subsiding, so theater attendance was up. Americans everywhere were watching the stars, and few stars shined as brightly as one of America's most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astor's personal story wasn't a happy one. Born poor and widowed at 24, Mary Astor had spent years looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe.

Lots of court coverage
Reviewed: 01-12-23
Narrator was excellent, nice voice. The first 20%of this book paved a good segway into the rest of the book. 70% of the remainjng book provided coverage of the court proceedings of the custody case between Astor/Thorpe, with lots of mud slinging. If you like salacious details, this is your book. Exposes a lot about the dirty details of prominent people in Hollywood. I found the meeting of all heads of the studios with Mary Astor during the trial to be quite interesting, information not released to the public at the time. Sad that the child involved was neglected by her narcissistic parents. The balance of the book gave varied details about the resulting effects upon Hollywood, court procedures, Marylyn Thorpe, and careers of both parents. It's a good read for those who find court proceedings interesting, which I do.

From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a listener “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen.

Story
Since 1929, Hollywood’s brightest stars have flocked to the Chateau Marmont as if it were a second home. An apartment building-turned-hotel, the Chateau has been the backdrop for generations of gossip and folklore: where director Nicholas Ray slept with his 16-year-old Rebel Without a Cause star Natalie Wood; Jim Morrison swung from the balconies; John Belushi suffered a fatal overdose; and Lindsay Lohan got the boot after racking up nearly $50,000 in charges in less than two months. Much of what has happened inside the Chateau’s walls has eluded the public eye - until now.

Dorothy M Kilgallen was a remarkable woman, tenacious and fearless...to her detriment. The only issue I had with this book was that the writer repeated certain phrases and points over and over, making the number of chapters unnecessary. The information regarding Ron Pataky seemed like a last minute addition.

I will refer to it several times again, I am sure. It gave me confidence in my own beliefs. I am grateful for it being written, published and distributed in order for it to reach me. Thank you.

The beginning of Hollywood

This book isn't limited to the mystery of the murder of a prominent Hollywood director, but about the early days of movie making and the characters involved in it's history.
Details of events that occurred in the lives of the characters are knitted together to provide a complete picture of the influences that led to the murder as well as the twists and turns of the film industry. Sometimes the story seems a bit too long, but if you trudge through the many chapters, you will learn a great deal about old Hollywood. Christopher Lane is a highly experienced and excellent narrator of this book.
