I sought out this book after an encounter with an intractable alcoholic, who at the age of
40 has a failing liver and adamant refusal to go to rehab. Perplexed, I was looking for answers to this baffling and cunning addiction. I could not have stumbled across a better book. The author strikes gold with her compassionate heart, a pleasant voice, research backed information and a delightful delivery of a most dire topic. My heart has shifted toward those who struggle with substance abuse disorders. She shares practical and tactical approaches to navigating and overcoming the throes of addiction. Her authenticity and humanity come through alongside her expertise in the field of addition medicine.
This book gives empathetic and powerful insights into the working of the addiction prone brain. She touches on the ubiquitous influences of our daily lives that set the stage of addictive patterns.
I would recommend this book to all. The first chapter is a shocker but keep going - it is worth it.

The velvet tone of Prentice’s voice in unmistakable. The rate of speech is perfection for warm relaxation. The story of the fisherman is meandering in a lovely and intriguing way. I listened to the end. And alas, it was a cliffhanger.
Looking forward to similar stories in delivery and content.

I am already irritated by titles that say “Take Control of Your Life” — but subtitles like “silencing fear..and winning the mental game” Well, that I am interested in. The reason I bought the book was because of the cover. Beautiful teals and yellow with a smart looking gal on the cover. Upon further inspection I noticed CLUTTER! And multiple vases...Ostensibly these vases were intended to beautify but it in multiples they just created clutter and chaos. Okay. I will bite Mel.
I am truly glad I did. While Mel isn’t a therapist or Dr she is a smart lady with the common sense approach of an older sister. Except this sister is backed by research. Not only did I enjoy the book I am confident that I am better for reading it. Go ahead, buy it. You will Thank me and Mel.

Heart warmed by Bianca's Play with Fire

Bianca's struggles are easily recognizable in me. From the need for external validation to weight issues and constant comparisons among peer groups. Bianca is real, vulnerable and available to the reader in her self-proclaimed imperfections. But she doesn't stop at the "woe is me" stage -- she steps into uninvited challenges and emerges transformed.
Her sense of humor coupled with her sound biblical knowledge made this book a delightful and meaningful at the same time.
She resists the urge to tie a bow on a "perfect" story and acknowledges that struggle will always be with us - but we are not alone in the refiners fire.
