Story
Over 200 years ago, famed explorer Meriwether Lewis died on the Natchez Trace under mysterious circumstances. Historians still argue whether it was suicide or murder. That shouldn't affect a weekend campout in the present day for Frannie Shoemaker and her friends, but it does. They meet interesting characters at a mountain man rendezvous and get mixed up as usual with the strange goings-on. Because camping can be murder!

Geocaching isn't supposed to be about finding dead bodies. But when retiree Frannie Shoemaker goes camping, standard definitions don't apply. A weekend in a beautiful state park in Iowa buzzes with fund-raising events, a search for ninja turtles, a bevy of suspects, and lots of great food. But are the campers in the wrong place at the wrong time once too often?

This was a great book that I found very interesting. I like geocaching and loved how it fit into the mystery. As usual, Frannie and her cohorts can't seem to go anywhere without stumbling upon a body. (Remind me never to go camping with them. 😁) The characters are relatable and likeable. We all have that one (or more) relative that occasionally seems to get on our last nerve. But we love them anyway. A fun book and a quick read. The narration was stellar and pleasant to listen to. Recommended to add to your cozy mystery to-be-read list.

I like any mystery that makes it difficult to figure out "who-dunnit" until late in the book. I liked the characters. They were fun and likeable. The humor was laugh inducing and well done. The narrator does a great job differentiating between characters and is pleasant to listen to. You'll enjoy this book!

I found the story to be very enjoyable. I could picture the campgrounds and the small town because they reminded me of places I used to camp several years ago. I had a hard time at first following the story. In the first 20 minutes or so, (audiobook version), you are introduced to two sisters and four couples. That's 10 character names, their occupations, plus a couple of pet names to try to sort out in quick order. At about 30 minutes into the audiobook, I ended up rewinding back to the beginning and starting over so I could sort out who was married to whom, their relationship to each other, and what was going on. That may just be a flaw in my brain, but I have a hard time when an author throws so many characters at the reader (listener) at the beginning of a book. From then on, it was a great book! (Also of note: this was my first book in this series, so I was unfamiliar with the recurring cast of characters.) The audio narration was well done with the narrator putting just enough different inflections in her voice to make it easy to follow as to which character was talking. Pleasant to listen to.

A fun read!

This is an absolutely fun read! (or in my case, a fun listen!) The story is what many would consider a "cozy mystery". It has mystery, intrigue, and twists and turns, but without any dark, graphic murder elements. Fun for the whole family. 😉 It's my first, but not my last, book by this author. The narration was spot on. Great voice character differentiation and a pleasant tone to listen to. I look forward to listening to or reading more by Elaine Macko.
Although this would be considered a "stand alone" novel, I'd love to see the other Alex Harris Mystery books make their way to audio.

Story
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

This was a great collection of stories. I recently finished the first 5 Duck & Cover books, and this was a nice bonus with some funny back stories. I think my favorite character may be Fidget! Calvin the cat was pretty funny, also. Willie and Coy are idiots, but likeable ones. Benjamin Wallace, you HAVE to bring Calvin back. PLEASE!
