Should we pursue fame and fortune or the respect of our friends and family? How can we make the world a better place?

Hated the midpoint and thought Ard Rhys was a stupid character!
- For a very long time nobody could find stones
- Stones were hidden crazy well
- They could only be used by Elfs and so there was no risk if just anyone found them and nobody would
- She was warned that if she went after the stones she'd regret and everyone would die
yet she still decides to put together a bunch of ppl. Do not disclose full risk and get them all killed. She was less of Gendelf and more of a power-hungry narcissist. Felt like all her decisions were just so conflicted for book 2 would be created... Pretty weak

Story
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Bit poor world building

there is a disconnect between the world and the characters. apparently all the champions are killers, assassins and hard people! But, they are shoked when one of them tries to escape and gets killed...
Also apparently main character was whipped when she arrived at prison and she is indignant about it; if this a medieval, top security, people only go in but never come out sort of place... getting whipped is kind of expected especially if you have just killed very high value target, not only expected but like a minimum....
I'm like 2h away from end and she has not assistanted anyone!! This is love triangle not great story of an assassin!

This was almost a self-development book. Lots of good stuff on EQ. I also loved that this was written by scientist v.s. some misc person... Also, it was great how John oftentimes made a distinction between science and something that might be true but cannot or has not been proven by the scientific method and we should take it with a grain of salt
