Story
By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

I have always enjoyed the Letty character, but her career-starting story is a good one. Well written, excellent story and as usual a good performance from Richard Ferrone. If you like Sandford, you will like this one.

Perhaps one of the most important books
Reviewed: 04-16-22
The book does a good job of dissecting the COVID pandemic and our failure in responding to it. Unlike a lot of books, Gottlieb comes forth with solutions that I hope leadership works toward. I enjoy him on TV and the book does not disappoint, but if you have a short attention span you may tire out before he gets finished. His presentation if fairly even handed.

I suspect McCarthy is an acquired taste. The book is quirky but interesting. The movie did a good job of capturing the book. I recently saw The Road, and will go back an listen to or read the book.

There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Love the stories and the narration. Titus Welliver was meant to play Bosch. He is sort of running out of time. They may have him working out of a nursing home one of these years. Maybe it is time to write about cases he would have had earlier.

Story
Three years ago, Jason Bourne embarked on a mission in Estonia with his partner and lover, a fiery Treadstone agent code-named Nova. Their job was to rescue a Russian double agent who’d been smuggled out of St. Petersburg in the midst of an FSB manhunt. They failed. The Russian died at the hands of a shadowy assassin known only by the nickname Lennon. Now everything has changed for Bourne. Nova is gone, killed in a mass shooting in Las Vegas. Bourne is a lone operative, working in the shadows for Treadstone, when he’s called in for a new mission in London.

I read all the original books and this was consistent with them. Loved the movies, but always questioned the psychological problems that Bourne has and in this case the brainwashing of Nova. Scott Brick does his usual best job and the story ends well but overall the story is a little far fetched.

Neal Carey is not your usual private eye. A graduate student at Columbia University, he grew up on the streets of New York, usually on the wrong side of the law. Then he met a P.I. who introduced him to the Bank, an exclusive institution with a sideline in keeping its wealthy clients happy and out of trouble. They pay Neal's college tuition, and Neal gets an education that can't be found in any textbook, from learning how to trail a suspect to mastering the proper way to search a room. Now it's payback time.

Interesting Early Novel
Reviewed: 09-10-20
I listened to this novel after listening/reading 5 of his later books. This was a little lighter than some of the later novels. Humorous at times serious at other times. The main character relies much more on cunning rather than violence, although he can get violent on occasion. Performance was excellent!

Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows - to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before. A killer who is just like him. Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry.

I have not quite finished listening to the presentation, but the story is engaging, There are a couple of errors: He once refers to an AK74 (should be 47) and talks of raising his sighting when aiming at a target that is closer (he should be aiming lower).

Story
Clayton Deese looks like a small-time criminal, muscle for hire when his loan shark boss needs to teach someone a lesson. Now, seven months after a job that went south and landed him in jail, Deese has skipped out on bail, and the US Marshals come looking for him. They don't much care about a low-level guy - it's his boss they want - but Deese might be their best chance to bring down the whole operation. Then, they step onto a dirt trail behind Deese's rural Louisiana cabin and find a jungle full of graves.

An interesting police procedural, but not up to Sandford standards. Maybe I have just heard too many of them. Lucus is wounded and we take a few months out of the story for no particular reason...apparently, none of the others did anything while he was recovering. Everyone seems a little older and more tired. To his credit, Sandford has allowed the characters to age and mature. Perhaps it's just that I am not ready for the characters to change.
