About this listen

The world’s most ruthlessly efficient assassin, Jason Bourne, is facing the one force he can’t defeat - his own past - in the latest thrilling entry in Robert Ludlum’s New York Times best-selling series.

Three years ago, Jason Bourne embarked on a mission in Estonia with his partner and lover, a fiery Treadstone agent code-named Nova. Their job was to rescue a Russian double agent who’d been smuggled out of St. Petersburg in the midst of an FSB manhunt.

They failed. The Russian died at the hands of a shadowy assassin known only by the nickname Lennon.

Now everything has changed for Bourne. Nova is gone, killed in a mass shooting in Las Vegas. Bourne is a lone operative, working in the shadows for Treadstone, when he’s called in for a new mission in London - to prevent another assassination masterminded by Lennon.

But nothing about this mission is what it seems. As Bourne engages in a cat-and-mouse game with Lennon across the British countryside, he discovers that everything he thought he knew about the past was a lie. And with the body count rising, he comes to an inevitable conclusion: Some secrets should stay buried.

Vintage Bourne

I read all the original books and this was consistent with them. Loved the movies, but always questioned the psychological problems that Bourne has and in this case the brainwashing of Nova. Scott Brick does his usual best job and the story ends well but overall the story is a little far fetched.

Narrator

I like Scott Brick .
But, his narration has lost understanding of context. His tone in speaking is angry all the time. Though good in some places, it ruins the story. I think it’s laziness. (I think he thinks it brings intensity. It only becomes monotonous)
Anyway, it made it hard to finish the book. My two cents.

2 months to finish

It's a Bourne novel, right? So why was it so difficult to pay attention? Love Scott Brick, but even he cannot make the story interesting.

So so

Love the movies, didn’t translate the same as a book. There was no real resolution.

Over done

Way to many synonym filled paragraphs it was like Steve Martin in the Jerk “ is all I need is this lamp and this… “ seems like they were trying to make the book longer by filling it with useless phrases

It was a book. Very predictable

I have read or listened to many of the series and this one is just blah, not clever or mysterious. Easy to guess what’s going to happen next. Scott Brick was amazing as always

I don’t hand out five stars easily.

Like most people I have seen all of the Jason Bourne movies. And I enjoyed them very much. However, I have not read any of those novels. Until now. This was an excellent read. There is a nice build up to the climax which seems to go on and on and on.
I definitely feel good about the reading I gave it and suggest you give it a try

Just Too Intense!

If you are familiar with the term “ham sandwich“ then perhaps this review might have greater meaning for you.

I have always enjoyed reading the Bourne series and I especially like Scott Brick’s narration in other books I have listened to, especially the Jack reacher series. However, I just couldn’t get myself to finish listening to this novel.

I fully understand and appreciate the intonations and emotion that a professional reader needs to deliver to bring the story to life.

There were simply too many times in this novel where the level of intensity provided by the narrator is just over-the-top. Imagine you’re reading a story and all of the words on the page are uppercase, bold type, and every sentence is followed by five exclamation marks. That is what it feels like listening to this novel.

I kept expecting the high intensity reading to slow down and give way to calm and an emotional respite but it just never did.

I still love the Jason Bourne series and I still thoroughly enjoy listening to Scott Brick narrate, but I might be better served just reading this novel instead of listening to it so I can control the level of intensity that I experience.
