Story was ok, narration was like Siri reading the book

I was expecting some really good twist but there was none. Overall the book was okay but the narration sounded just like Siri was reading it, and it was not great. I do like the concept of story society.

I love Dr. Matthew Walker’s sleep science stories. I first was introduced to his study in Master Class. It was so fascinating and life changing. But this book’s narrator is so rigid, monotone, cold and tense that it sort of causes me anxiety. I am so disappointed that the book so fantastic and life-giving is read in an anxiety-inducing voice. The content is an absolute 5 star. Please consider changing the narrator.

This is about the most depressing book that I have ever read. The book goes on and on without having much points or interest in storyline, very mediocre writing, and goes into way too details about nothing. The book is over 10 hours, which I think could have been condensed to 2 hours. Very disappointed.

Good grief. Why was this listed in the editor’s pick??? I am utterly disappointed. Good thing it was free to member and it was short. I wouldn’t have been able to bear it any longer.

The content was okay but I would have enjoyed it more if the narration was not so overly theatrical. It was just way too much and felt “sticky”. And the narrator’s “s” sound is hissy. Wish didn’t get this book.

Ordinary story, very confusing narration

The story was very ordinary and predictable. After taking forever on details, the ending was so quick and uninteresting as if the author ran out of time before the deadline and just rush to finish it off. The narration was really not my favorite. The narrator’s voice offered good range but she used all of the range randomly and poorly without much control that I was always confused whose line she was reading. Sometimes, even in one sentence, the range would have variation from mimicking man’s voice to child like voice to feminine voice that I became so distracted. Child’s line sounded like a man or grown woman, then Steffi’s voice sounded like Ryan and Ryan sounded like Steffi. The emotion in the voice didn’t convey genuine feelings and sounded very fake. It was pretty annoying.

The book is mediocre on everything. The story, performance (a lot of noises and sounds almost like the narrator was smoking at times???), and writing style... Definitely not a page turner and It is not something that makes me want to follow the author. Not very memorable.

The story developed slowly at first, with a depressed tone, and I felt a bit impatient. But the character development is richly done, and the narration by Julia Whelan is brilliant throughout the book. The ending was somewhat predictable but overall, I enjoyed the story and am more interested to read other books by the author as well.

David Whyte's poetry and philosophy expanded and narrated by the author. Deeply evocative and poignant - brilliantly written and eloquently narrated. This is one of the rare books that truly touched my life in the way I understand myself and thoughtfully choose how to live my life. His poetry resonated with me so much... Simply magnificent...a treasure.
I have since then read "What to remember when waking" and am now reading other books by David Whyte.

I had a high hope for this one and ended up quite disappointed. The author narrates the book herself and her voice and the tone is very depressing and monotone. Not sure why they couldn’t choose someone who is at least more pleasant. I had to force myself to finish it because there was nothing interesting or new concept that intrigued me. I do appreciate her honesty and vulnerability in the book, however, right around the middle, she starts to talk about past regressions and her lives in another period of times as different persons. I am a Christian and do not believe in reincarnation, so, not only this freaked me out but also gave up on the rest of the story at that point. Overall, this was a very depressing book where the author kind of whines about various aspects of her busy life while learning to balance her work/soul satisfaction. If you are in middle age soul searching quest, instead of this book, I recommend “Finding your own North Star”, which is quite enlightening.
