Story
Daniel Carter used to be a homicide detective, but his last case - the hunt for a serial killer - went wrong in strange ways and soured the job for him. Now he's a private investigator trying to live a quiet life. Strangeness, however, has not finished with him. First, he inherits a bookstore in Providence from someone he's never heard of, along with an indignant bookseller who doesn't want a new boss.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s like a crime noir and an HPL story had a baby, with a surprise ending. It was great!

Story
More than a traditional biography, In the Mountains of Madness will place Lovecraft and his work in a cultural context, as an artist more in tune with our time than his own. Much of the literary work on Lovecraft tries to place him in relation to Edgar Allan Poe, M. R. James, or Arthur Machen; these ideas have little meaning for most contemporary listeners. In his provocative new book, W. Scott Poole reclaims the true essence of Lovecraft in relation to the comics of Joe Lansdale, the novels of Stephen King, and more.

Great biography of Lovecraft
Reviewed: 11-24-24
I liked the depth of this biography, and how he defends Lovecraft’s mother and wife. They are typically seen as destroying his life, but the author goes into much detail about his relationships with women. I highly recommend this biography.

Greg Wise reads Pierre Boulle's chilling, iconic novel about a nightmare world where apes rule over men. In a spaceship that can travel at the speed of light, Ulysse, a journalist, sets off from Earth for the nearest solar system. He finds there a planet which resembles his own, except that on Soror humans behave like animals and are hunted by a civilised race of primates.

I won’t ruin the plot, but it is very different compared to the book. I can see why they made the changes in the movie because it is more cinematic and cheaper for the budget. The ending is awesome in both the movie and the book, but in very different ways.

The dense Michigan forest. Haunting wails. The clip-clop of demon hooves on a bridge to nowhere. It’s more than a tall tale to Brenda Jennings, whose sister disappeared in those woods one fateful night. Three years later, on a solo stakeout in the dark, Brenda goes in after her. She’s desperate for answers, and terrified to find what lies waiting on the other side of that bridge.

Another Awesome Story by J.M.

I’ve only started to read Mr. Malerman’s books recently thanks to the Talking Scared podcast. His interviews are great, so I started to download his books. They are awesome! If you haven’t read Goblin yet, give it a go. It’s a series of interconnected stories set in the same town named Goblin. After hearing him talk about his journey as an author, he has given me motivation to finish my own stories. Thank you for the great stories and motivation, Josh! -Steve

Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

Story
Lindisfarne, AD 793. There had been portents - famine, whirlwinds, lightning from clear skies, serpents seen flying through the air. But when the raiders came, no one was prepared. They came from the North, their dragon-prowed longships gliding out of the dawn mist as they descended on the kingdom's most sacred site. It is 8th June AD 793, and with the pillage of the monastery on Lindisfarne, the Viking Age has begun. While his fellow monks flee before the Norse onslaught, one young novice stands his ground.

A Great New Series from Harffy!
Reviewed: 05-28-23
I have enjoyed the Beobrand series, and this is a new series set a little further along in history. The novel is set in what is now Northern England, and it starts with the first Norse (Viking) attacks on the unguarded monasteries. A monk who becomes a warrior by necessity has to gather together a motley crew of warriors to defend his home Abbey. It is action packed, and it is another great work by Harffy. I can’t wait to read the next book of this series.

Matthew has done it again! Forest of Foes is a great tale of warriors from northern England who travel to what is now known as France, on their way to Rome. They have a few side quests on the way, which slows their progress significantly. I won’t go into too many details, but the ending is very exciting and unexpected. The narrator, Mr. Edwards is one of the best in his business. It is a joy to listen to his narration. It’s also nice to hear Matthew speak for a while at the end of the book. He also has a great podcast called “Rock, Paper, Swords!” along with author Steven A. McKay, where he gives you some background into his writing process and upcoming work. Overall, a wonderful and exciting story!

It falls to Beobrand to mount the defence of the stronghold, but even while the battle rages, old and powerful enemies have mobilised against him, seeking vengeance for past events.

Another Great Tale by Matthew Harffy!
Reviewed: 08-21-20
I have been reading Mr. Harffy’s books since his first book, The Serpent Sword. I also like to get the audio versions to listen to while driving to work. This book is great in that it brings back a lot of characters from earlier books, but it also shows you what Beobrand’s life is like now that he is a little older. He is still a very flawed man, but he owns it. I won’t spoil anything with details, but I really enjoyed this tale. Barnaby Edwards has a great voice for narration and I really enjoyed his work. Thank you to Matthew Harffy for another wonder tale of 7th Century Britain!
