Story
Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper. In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

Epic!!!
Reviewed: 05-17-19
This book is just epic, I think it might be the best in the series so far.
If you've read the 7 previous books, then you're presumably quite invested in the series, so I'm happy to say that you will not be disappointed with this instalment.
Absolutely epic!
I would recommend that if you never read the Strange Dogs spin-off novella, it's worth going back and reading before this.

Story
Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent's head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are "threeps", robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden's Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real, and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

Story
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Story
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

I have two hours left in this book and I just can't even stand to listen to it any more.
There's an ok story somewhere in here, and RC Bray's narration is stellar as always, but the pointless banter between Joe and Skippy just became insufferable.

An iconic scifi classic

It's one of the most iconic scifi classics, and the narration is great. It has a very 60's-ish scifi vibe to it but it's part of its charm in my opinion.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is oldschool scifi!
Reviewed: 05-08-18
I went into this story with very little idea of what it's about purely based on the good reviews.
I think that's probably the best way to go into it, so I'll just say that if you enjoy classic pulp scifi stories such as those in Analog and Asimov magazines then you'll likely find this to be a gripping story.
For a point of comparison, I found it to be similar in tone (though not necessarily story content) to such stories as The Andromeda Strain, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the David Cronenberg film Existenz.
It's not beyond criticism (which I won't go into for the sake of spoilers) but I found it hard to stop listening as I wanted to know what would happen next.
If you're looking for a gripping, way out there scifi tale then definitely consider "Infinite".

Recap the family trees before you start this one.
Reviewed: 05-02-18
This book picks up 10 years after the previous story. I enjoyed this new chapter and especially liked the new characters Lyria and Ephraim.
If it's been a while since you listened to the previous book in the series, do yourself a favour and go and read a quick summary before you start this one as there are a lot of references a lot of relatively obscure characters from the last books and if you've forgotten about all the various family trees and relationships you might get a bit lost.
This book is the start of a new trilogy so don't expect much in the way of closure, but after finishing it I'm very keen to find out what happens next and looking forward to Dark Age.
