Story
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

A Darker Gamache Story
Reviewed: 12-12-22
it was almost painful to listen to what happens to some of the series most beloved characters, even though the story keeps you guessing. I was disappointed that so many characters had to resort to constantly saying the f- word instead of really expressing emotion . Louise Penny is usually so much better at that. Still love the series.

Dorset is the latest setting for the talents of Inspector Ian Rutledge, a veteran of the First World War still haunted, literally, by his actions. Indeed, his personal ghost only serves to complicate things as his inner doubts blend into the trauma of the case.

Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions to walking trees to winged beasts in the woods to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.

Story
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

From the authors of the best-selling series Cherringham. A young poacher is found shot dead in the woods of a grand estate near Mydworth. A sad accident it would seem. Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away.

Another great Gamach Book
Reviewed: 10-21-19
The author has to go more into the darkness to get to the light in this story. It reveals more of the love that the people of Three Pines have for the Chief Inspector and his 2nd in command. There are many twists and turns in this one, all cummulating into what the ending should be. Can't wait for the next book! (Note- this has more obscenities than I normally see in her work, and she is such an amazing , intelligent writer I was surprised she used those in stead of description)

Great actor, but would have enjoyed listening without all the curse words. Was a bit dry, and that certainly didn't help. A class actor, who is as intelligent as he is, can do better.
