Story
Gather round as today’s most diabolically clever authors twist simple moments into otherworldly horrors. An empty baby stroller. A scratching underneath the bed. A farmhouse in the moonlight. With an unnerving sense of the macabre, these stories transform our greatest fears into bone-chilling realities.

Story
In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Story
In 1888, five gruesome murders shocked the civilized public. A bloodthirsty killer was on the loose in the slums of London. The world was on the lookout for Jack the Ripper. Scotland Yard never found their man - or so they said publicly. The police knew the killer's identity but concealed it to save the ruling class from embarrassment. The Escape of Jack the Ripper reveals how British elites manipulated the public to protect one of their own. Through meticulous research, Jonathan Hainsworth and Christine Ward-Agius have uncovered the killer's identity.

a simple solution.
Reviewed: 01-20-25
isn't the simplest solution the most likely. I like druitt as a p.o.i. for the most famous unknown serial killer for all of time. jack has to be a physically fit person, in my mind. druitt has that and a mental break! I like the way this book doesn't go into the more creative ideas usually presented in ripper theories. it lays out why druitt would have been a suspect and how he is likely to be the man described repeatedly by many contemporary police and detectives. I can't say it was ever a man who came to the attention of the investigation, but to be fair to Scotland yard, this is a very special, hallmark case.

top notch horror

love all the little horrors, just like how I loved the shining. and of course, it's easy to take in all of Danny's downfalls, you know what he came out of, could have ended up much worse. but to love your main character, so easy to feel how he feels for each difficult situation he is in. i really expected dick halloran ghosty to help at the end, but. duh, who would be left at the overlook... dick sure got out of there with Danny that horrible night when the overlook 'destroyed itself'. Danny reminds me somewhat of the x-men character wolverine, all through the book, with that incredibly gentle aspect, shining folks can see past the anger, and he becomes a strong figure in spite of himself. excellent.
insert Shakespeare quote.
Cincinnati is 1200 miles from the overlook, and I wish it was further. thanks so much s. King and for contemplating and giving doc his will power back.

This shocking but true story is told in dozens of short, riveting chapters you can't put down. In the depths of the Depression, millions worldwide followed every twist and turn of the Lindbergh baby kidnap/murder.

by who...or possibly whom.

The Anatomy of Motive offers a dramatic, insightful look at the development and evolution of the criminal mind. The famed former chief of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit, John Douglas was the pioneer of modern behavioral profiling of serial criminals. Working again with acclaimed novelist, journalist, and filmmaker Mark Olshaker, and using cases from his own fabled career as examples, Douglas takes us further than ever before into the dark corners of the minds of arsonists, hijackers, bombers, poisoners, serial killers, and mass murderers.

over/under-statement

Just that some of the examples are repeated and others, like gacy, are so understated.
Also, Josef Fritzl is a straight up, 23 on this scale of 1-22 of evil. Several of his own children/grand-children never saw daylight their whole life until release from this homemade prison. He told his family his daughter was missing that whole time, people who lived nearby had heard sounds from time to time. The whole story isnt told in this book, there really isn't time to tell all the awful things that ever happened but just seems like so many things were not said.
And the last paragraph of the book is the worst. Saying that various god-figures have given rules to live by to prevent commitment of evil acts, yet, how many disgusting, violent acts war or peace time were committed in the very name of God? Well, i'm not against religion but it seemed like such an added on little piece of bias.
