About this listen

Gather round as today’s most diabolically clever authors twist simple moments into otherworldly horrors. An empty baby stroller. A scratching underneath the bed. A farmhouse in the moonlight. With an unnerving sense of the macabre, these stories transform our greatest fears into bone-chilling realities.

The Pram by Joe Hill

A husband’s obsessive desire for a child leads to an unexpected manifestation of his yearning in a nightmarish short story about fatherhood dreams by New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill.

Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix

Obey the rules. It’s the only way to survive the night in a short story about what hides in the dark by the New York Times bestselling author of The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires.

It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman

Some chilling campfire tales ring too true to ignore. For one young woman, an urban legend calls her into the woods in a spine-tingling short story by the bestselling author of Bird Box.

In Bloom by Paul Tremblay

There’s something in the water in this hallucinatory short story by Paul Tremblay, bestselling author of The Cabin at the End of the World and The Beast You Are.

Best of Luck by Jason Mott

Did you ever hear the one about the man with a string of bad luck? The worst is still to come in a chilling short story of an insatiable friendship by the New York Times bestselling author of Hell of a Book.

Big Bad by Chandler Baker

For a family trying to make an isolated farmhouse into a home, fear and rage are getting harder to control in a primal short story by the New York Times bestselling author of Whisper Network and Cutting Teeth.

Cleverly written contemporary takes on monsters

this collection was a pleasant surprised. if you're looking for modern horror with a nod to some classics, and just plain old good stories, this book is a good bet.

Covid and (not) Amish

The first story was painfully annoying. The author's biases are plastered throughout the story. If you find the Amish and "long covid" scary, 'The Pram' is perfect for you.

the other stories are decent. most of them read like Creepypastas that you can read for free. if there's one bright spot for this book, it's the Narrators.

Unique scary stories. I highly recommend. Something different. The narrators do a great job seriously.

Great Shorts for a Spooky Night!

Some instant classics by Joe Hill & Paul Tremblay, as well as a great performance of "Bad Luck that plays like a Jordan Peele film. All stories are excellently written and narrated save one, "Ankle Snatchers," by Grady Hendrix, which was a stinker on both accounts. Strange casting choice on that one, and I'm pretty sure kids have been writing that basic story for middle school english since the 50s. Absolutely recommend the others, though!

Most of the stories are quite good

However, all of them are predictable and lack real imagination. I expected more from Joe Hill's contribution, after enjoying many of his earlier work.

The final story is the worst of the lot, and should have been little more than a five page short, not the long, unnecessarily rambling attempt at fleshing out whole unlikeable characters. It could have been improved greatly if the author had used ChatGPT to trim the fat. And perhaps add some surprises.

Spooky Fun!

I've really enjoyed this series and hope more of the same type are in the works. It introduced me to people like Josh Malerman and Grady Hendrix. Pick it up! You'll be glad you did. ;-)

Riveting, perfectly scary, and well written

A perfect dabble to test out horror writers. I wish there were ten more if these. Each highlights the unique style and imagination of the author and it led me to a new stack of books by each. So much fun!
