Decent but way too much preaching

It starts off slow but eventually gets good. Just be prepared for A LOT of preaching and god talk. It’s like Sunday School at times.

Story
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Soo slow!

Getting through most of this book was a slog. The first 3/4 of this book ranged from boring at worst to average at best. However, the ending was solid and very entertaining. Just one person’s opinion, but definitely not his best work.

I love these little backstories. It’s cool to get the history of different stories and characters (even if they are made up.) It also adds depth to the Galaxy’s Edge universe. Also, this story’s price was right!

Story
The Coalition is reeling. New Vega and its other worlds have fallen beneath the boot of the newly allied Savage marines, and the death count continues to rise at a staggering rate. One thing is clear: The war to come will be a fight for the very survival of the species. For both sides in this conflict, now is the time to become what fate, and victory, demand. The Savages - post-human monsters who believe themselves to be gods - are intent on remaking civilization in their own violent and pathological image. Yet their alliance is tenuous.

Ugh! So tedious...
Reviewed: 04-03-21
If you liked Galaxy’s Edge, then be prepared to be disappointed. The first book in this series was a little slow and meandering but it had enough action to keep it going. This book though... what a slog! I almost returned it 3 times. I’m not even sure it was actually written by the same writers. It says it was but if so, they forgot their genre and their audience. The first 3 chapters are painful. I was hopeful in chapter 4 when the action picked up. It didn’t last though. I ended up skipping big chunks of several chapters. The problem is that they include just enough important stuff among the endless drivel, that it makes you worry about skipping ahead too far. The book gets back on track at the end of the first part. That and all of the second part of the book are MUCH better. Unfortunately, it’s only about a quarter of the whole book. Maybe a third. It definitely doesn’t make up for all the garbage you have to go through to get there. This book should have been 3-4 hours shorter. We would have gotten the background we needed without it being so painful for so long. Fingers crossed that book 3 is better. I won’t sit through a bad book again.

Humans expanded into space...only to find a universe populated with multiple alien species bent on their destruction. Thus was the Colonial Union formed, to help protect us from a hostile universe. The Colonial Union used the Earth and its excess population for colonists and soldiers. It was a good arrangement...for the Colonial Union. Then the Earth said: no more.

Decent book, disappointing ending
Reviewed: 03-18-21
I’ve really enjoyed this series. If you have come this far, you obviously should finish. Just be prepared to be underwhelmed with the ending. Not sure if Scalzi ran out of time or just didn’t care, but he really phoned in the ending. It’s especially frustrating since he apparently has no plans to actually finish the series. I can understand being burned out after writing 6 books. However, authors owe it to all their fans, who have bought all their books, and made them all their money, to give stories a proper ending. All the false starts and extra writing he did this time isn’t our fault or problem. Giving us the garbage that wasn’t good enough to make it into the book is not a suitable alternative to a real ending. Very disappointing!

Story
Retired from his fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys watching his adopted daughter grow up. That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game — as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war.

Another solid book
Reviewed: 03-07-21
I enjoyed this book as much as the first two. Everything is pretty consistent from the writing to the performance. If you like the first two then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in this.
My only complaint is in the performance. We know who is speaking! You don’t need to say, “he said”, “Jane said”, “whoever said,” etc. after each line. Especially when it’s only two people talking and they have obviously different voices. It’s annoying, distracting, and adds unnecessary length to the story.
