Rot in jail or join the Marines?

Po Abbato turns to crime in a desperate attempt to free his younger siblings from debt slavery.

He's caught, and offered a choice:

Spend 25 years in a digital prison while his body rots...

...or join the Marines.

War has returned to the solar system, sooner than anyone expected. Po must learn fast what it truly means to fight alongside others.

That is, if he's going to make it.

Because humanity's enemy has returned at last...

About the Creator

Scott Bartlett writes books from inside a mech, which is inside the hangar bay of a light armored cruiser stationed just past Jupiter.
Certain parts of the last sentence may not be completely true. Here are some more believable statements:
Scott was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the easternmost province of Canada. During his decade-long journey to become a full-time author, he supported himself by working an assortment of jobs…salmon hatchery technician, grocery clerk, youth care worker, ghostwriter, research assistant, pita maker, and freelance editor.
In 2014, he succeeded in becoming a full-time novelist, and he’s been writing science fiction at light speed ever since.

About the Performer

Mark Boyett has narrated 325 titles and counting in every genre, garnering an Audie Award for In Harm’s Way by Doug Stanton and an Earphones Awards for 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami.
He’s the voice of multiple hit sci-fi series including Star Force and Undying Mercenaries by B.V. Larson, The Black Fleet Trilogy by Joshua Dalzelle, and Mech Wars by Scott Bartlett.

Fun listen and no great surprises. Great way to pass the time. I recommend this one.

Fun and comfortably predictable.

Not a bad listen. Wish the set would have had more than books one and two

Good story

A "made for action" story and it delivers. I look forward to how this author develops.

Author shows promise!

I kept waiting for the story to start and then it was over. This seems to be based on current day Marines boot camp with a little Sci Fi twist to it. Narration was Excellent!

meh

Needs a serious ramp up in the story line and action. Two books in and there is no real understanding or purpose of the story or characters, what’s happening to them, or really any depth at all.

For example, why is there a random alien race helping Poe. Two entire books and a seemingly important character is nothing more than a creepy imaginary friend.

Narrator is keeping this series on life support.

Decent

Gives me a real Drop trooper/ Galaxies edge type feel. "Frog dogs" is pretty hilarious too.

good stuff

As I said in the title, the description dosent tell you for some reason but this is actually books 1 and 2. book 1 is interesting but definitely a bit more of a prologue. a good one for sure but things really ramp up in book 2. hope you guys enjoy it as me.

Great time, but it's actually 2 books

A captivating story by Scott Bartlett and masterfully narrated by Mark Boyett. I started the book on a vaca and snuck in lisenting time when I could. Nearlyl finished by time got home very late, but stayed up until 2:30am to find out what happened to Po. Looking forward to this series!

I love the ambiguity of right and wrong with the elites of both societies. Are we the good guys? Not in any ultimate sense, but enough to get the job done. Be a cog that makes a difference.

Great, thoughtful view of boot camp and the underlying progress and confusion of a soldier’s creation.

Two books under one title. The first, Conscript, spends a bit more time than usual setting up our main character's story, motivations, self-doubt, and reckless behaviors. This gradual introduction into Po Abbato's psyche, and the internal conflicts he battles with provides a welcome foundation onto which his actual battles as a spacefaring marine will eventually take place. Stuck between numerous rocks and impassable hard places, and with friends-who-may-be-foes around every corner, By the time we get to book two, Rifleman, Po's journey takes us on a fast paced and tension filled foray from his home colony, to boot camp, to alien worlds. Mark Boyett delivers exceptional multi-cultural voices expressing emotional torment, anger-fueled resentment, and religious faith of a wide cast of characters. The action feels true to form, and rich detail and natural dialogue is provided during every scene. The story is sure to delight those with a craving for military exploits and alien encounters while remaining grounded in the human condition.
