When you think of Black Excellence
Reviewed: 03-30-25
Loved reading an historical fiction that showed black excellence and not slavery, drugs, over sexualization, or trauma. A black family that escaped slavery (history in the first book) and made out on top and their desire to keep the family fortune progressing while also looking for love. Bridgerton-like feel. Absolutely lovely!

Story
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items, and, soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of slavery.

Great historical read
Reviewed: 02-17-25
I picked up this book thinking it would be a historical fiction. it is not. I thought I would be reading a novel. It's a documentary following the history of a sick and the slave women that have owned it throughout history. Even though it is about those women it is actually a great look into the history of slavery and didn't always focus on the sack itself. It brought the intricacies of surviving as a slave to light. I am glad that I gave this book a chance and purchased it on Audible even though I had the paperback. I feel this book was much better being read to me.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That's where Will's now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother's gun. So much depth for such a short read. Loved it

Besides the story, or rather the explanation of this person's experience, was done really well. I loved it. And I also love the author's explanation at the end for why he used this approach to bring this experience to us. Even though it's a rather sad experience it was done quite beautifully. This has become one that I will need to have in print in my home.

Black history AND black mermaids!!! LOVE IT
Reviewed: 02-05-22
I actually loved this book! The storyline was great!!! I loved hearing about this young, BLACK mermaid AND hearing bits and pieces of OUR history and OUR cultures originating from Africa. So beautifully written and definitely showing a wonderful love for our black features like our hair, our lips, and the like. From someone who definitely learned to love the skin they're in and expresses it so well. I was so for this book! I hope others will try this book as well.

It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

I am only half way through this book and I will honestly say I LOVE listening to Billy Porter tell his story! Every bit of it. From the funny to the sad he tells it and expresses it in his lively way that is uniquely him. As a mother there are definitely some cringy parts that made me sad but also some proud moments of Billy pursuing him dreams no matter what. Loving this book and loving ALL that is Billy Porter ❤❤❤❤
