Publisher's summary

The number one New York Times best seller, USA Today Book of the Year, now a major motion picture.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Every day the same.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Until today.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, January 2015 - Looking for the next Gone Girl? This fast-paced psychological thriller from Paula Hawkins just might be it. Addictive from the start and told from the perspective of not one but three unreliable narrators, The Girl on the Train delivers engrossing twists and turns in every direction. Rachel, the self-destructive protagonist, is equally sympathetic and appalling, and you can’t help but immerse yourself into her distorted and chaotic world in an attempt to unravel this tightly woven mystery. “Marries movie noir with novelistic trickery...hang on tight. You'll be surprised by what horrors lurk around the bend.” (USA Today)

“Nothing is more addicting than The Girl on the Train.” (Vanity Fair)

The Girl on the Train has more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl...[It] is liable to draw a large, bedazzled readership.” (The New York Times)

Give it time.

I almost gave up on this book after the first 15 minutes, because I found the narration to be so annoying. However, the story is very compelling. I am glad that I continued listening to the story, but I would not choose another book with these narrators. In future I will read any books by this author myself.

Good Solid Read

Not amazing, but thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. I suggest listening to it during your commute as you look out the window and observe flashes of a moment of strangers' lives.

A credit well spent!

Please avoid comparing to other recent novels and just take this one as a stand-alone well thought through mystery. The perspective on this one is pretty rare and quite surprising. I confess a real preference for complex characters presented flaws-and-all in my books, and this one did a fine job with that. If you like good writing, pretty good narration, and a great who-dun-it, you'll love this British mystery. Watch out for spoilers - - I've caught a few in the reviews. Just buy this one and enjoy.

A Standout Best of the Best Mystery/Thrillers

What a way to start the new year!! This highly praised book deserves all the press it has been getting. In a field that is overflowing with such abundant talent (the mystery/thriller) it is a real challenge to rise above to STANDOUT MUST READ status. This is Paula Hawkins' first book and it is riveting, tightly structured and breathtaking. It's one of those books that leaves you thinking this will be a tough act to follow!!

Great story with a let down ending

The story was really good as well as the performance. It was action packed. However the ending leaves the listener with unanswered questions.
Iwould listen to another book by Paula Hawkins.

This is NOT Gone Girl.

This story had it all. I actually appreciated that there was so much going on in this story. The performances of the ladies were wonderful and some of the best that I've listened to. Give this book a try and you won't be disappointed!

Be Prepared for Stops and Starts and a LONG journe

This book was recommended to me. Can't say I truly enjoyed it. It was hard to follow at times and dragged on far too long. The characters were far from real. I thought the ending was strange. It was just okay, but I would not recommend it to anyone.

A little sad, but has its moments

What made the experience of listening to The Girl on the Train the most enjoyable?

The book took a while for me to get into it, and by the end I was ready for it to be over. It had some good moments where I was excited and wanted to continue reading but there were also some parts that had me struggling through. The author does a good job of switching character perspectives and there is a decent amount of mystery and shock moments in the book. However, overall I think I had some trouble caring about the characters.
