I liked it!

It wasn’t a surprising twist, exactly. I guessed some of what was happening but I still thought the story was good. I prefer when the author co-writes with Greer Hendrix. This book felt a little more ‘procedural’ but I also felt that it had more character development than a Pekkanen/Hendrix book. I agree that the narrator could’ve been better but I didn’t find it as distracting as others.

Story
Blair Martin’s days rarely vary: she gets up, goes for a run, and then heads to work at a Manhattan literary agency where she nurtures authors through the publishing process. Her nights, spent alone in her too-large apartment, are similarly predictable. Then on an ordinary Wednesday, Blair enters her office building and spies a lost wallet. When Blair tracks down the owner, they arrange for a simple exchange. But the young woman, Maya, seems so vulnerable, much like Blair’s own daughter, Faith, who died tragically just last year, and Blair is unable to simply walk away.

Good short listen

An entertaining story and short listen for when you want to finish a story same day. I wished it was just a bit longer since the plot was pretty rushed and I’d be interested in knowing what happens next.

Story
Kit Darling is a maid with a snooping problem. She’s the “invisible girl,” compelled to poke into her wealthy clients’ closely guarded lives. It’s a harmless hobby until Kit sees something she can’t unsee in the home of her brand-new clients: a secret so dark it could destroy the privileged couple expecting their first child. This makes Kit dangerous to the couple. In turn, it makes the couple—who might kill to keep their secret—dangerous to Kit.

This book was half domestic thriller half police procedural and I found it compelling from beginning to end. Great pace and the plot is so good though it gets a little dark at times. Plenty of twists, some I saw coming some I didn’t. Overall a good book for thriller/mystery fans. Not the usual “maid falls for client’s abusive husband only to find she was actually being set up to be the replacement” trope.

Story
Wes and Ivy are madly in love. They've never felt anything like it. It's the type of romance people write stories about. But what kind of story? When it's good, it's great. Flowers. Grand gestures. Deep meaningful conversations where the whole world disappears. When it's bad, it's really bad. Vengeful fights. Damaged property. Arrest warrants.

Okay but save your credit
Reviewed: 07-29-23
I liked this book just enough to finish it, but I wanted to stop a few times, especially at the beginning and middle. It could’ve been a 3-4 hr novella. The best part of the book is the conclusion (the last 2.5 hours when things are actually happening.) It’s way too slow to get there, though. The plot is suspenseful but also kind of absurd. Some characters seem randomly thrown into the plot. I wish I hadn’t spent a credit on this. I’m more of a fan of mystery domestic thrillers than suspenseful crime thrillers. This is the latter and I can’t say I recommend this book.

Enjoyable!

I liked the story, it kept me interested the whole time. There aren’t any “twists” necessarily, so know that if you enjoy thrillers mainly for the twist. There’s still lots of suspense and mystery. I personally liked the ending because it’s not a typical sort of ending, which I enjoyed. It’s an easy listening kind of domestic thriller.

I enjoyed this book - some parts were predictable but still some surprises in the plot. Overall it kept me entertained enough to listen through to the end, though I agree with other readers that it was slower in the beginning. Once I got into it though, I was invested and wanted to know what the characters were up to. I would recommend for domestic thriller fans. The setting is political and some of that in the plot as well, but it’s not necessarily a political thriller!

Great Plot but Dark Themes
Reviewed: 05-23-23
I enjoyed the book despite the dark themes, though these types of books are not my favorite. Lots of twists as the plot unfolds, some more predictable than other but still a good story. I enjoyed the domestic thriller and suspense aspect of the story, but gave it 4 stars because I felt it was just a little darker than I usually like - may not be for you if you are triggered by SA and/or domestic violence.

It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....

I listened to this in just a few days (I don’t usually listen to books that quickly) because the story was compelling and I wanted to hear what would happen next. I liked the pace and the mystery and the narration was great, too. For fans of slightly darker domestic thrillers who enjoy a little creepiness.
