Story
For centuries, generations of Everlys have seen their brightest and best disappear, taken as punishment for a crime no one remembers, for a purpose no one understands. Their tormentor, a woman named Penelope, never ages, never grows sick–and never forgives a debt. Violet Everly was just a child when her mother Marianne vanished on a stormy night, determined to break the curse. And when Penelope cannot find her, she issues an ultimatum: Violet has ten years to find Marianne, or she will take her place.

this book had some very creative and interesting ideas but it barely did any world building and makes readers assume instead of being brought into the fantasy. The characters also all sounded the same which made it harder to become immersed in story.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

4th book's narrator ruins the audio version
Reviewed: 10-25-22
I loved the 1st 3 books, but the 4th book's narrator made me stop listening and order the book. Ms. Hardington's reading is more fitting for an encyclopedia entry, than to embody the complexity of these characters. It was impossible to lose oneself in the story, as with the 1st 3 books, since one's focus is on the poor and irritating clipped narration. Why did Finty not narrate the last book?

Story
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

Story
A beautifully written, unforgettable novel of a troubled marriage, set against the lush landscape and political turmoil of Trinidad. Monique Roffey's Orange Prize-shortlisted novel is a gripping portrait of post-colonialism that stands among great works by Caribbean writers like Jamaica Kincaid and Andrea Levy. When George and Sabine Harwood arrive in Trinidad from England, George is immediately seduced by the beguiling island, while Sabine feels isolated, heat-fatigued, and ill-at-ease.

Two-Dimentional and Dislikeable Female Character
Reviewed: 12-10-21
Well crafted, historically educational and some beautiful imagery. However, the main character was disappointing. One meets her as an abrasive, bitter and sometimes violent elderly women. Then about half way through the book, the story begins again with her as a young woman. just arrived in Trinidad. I had hoped that one could have liked her then, only to be sympathetic to the life events that hardened her to become the hateful elderly woman you meet during the first part of the book. However, this was not the case, she was as dislikeable as a young woman as she was as an old woman, and equally two-dimensional without depth or complexity of character or motives. I did not finish.
