The readers were flawless. I thought I was watching a play. Of course, I read this book many years ago and I was frightened then but I was interested in listening in the context of the political climate in this country now.

Story
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

One star since I couldn't get past the first hour. Seemed bound to use Steinbeck's East of Eden as a recipe. Slow and boring.
I'll continue to look forward to Grisham's future work, but in his own style of well-developed characters; ones that inspire empathy. I just could not slog through it.

I don't know how I finished this read . . . I hated the characters: they were whiney, psychologically unattractive, unauthentic, etc.
For instance, their child was kidnapped and possibly dead. How, then, is it even possible that there was the time to engage in silly sex?? not to mention the improbability of any reasonable character going on with their lives in such a circumstance. Enough said, although not an exhaustive litany of the wrongness of the book. Sorry.

So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

When I started listening to this book, I considered chucking it. But I hung in there mainly because I didn't have access to the internet. So I persisted. I came to really love the characters. Well done. I would have given it 5 stars but for the somewhat unsatisfying conclusion. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book.

I will return this book. This book title does not hint that this is a book about snuff films. It is pornographic and horrifing, I could not finish (I gave it a good try). I could not stand the graphic descriptions about killing and sexually torturing the women. It is not a good book to listen if the listener is looking for a good read. I do NOT get the rating.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.
