Story
Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she’d spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend.

Story
Georgie, back home at her estate in Eynsleigh, impatiently awaits the birth of her baby. But she has plenty to occupy her: Her new chef, Pierre, has arrived from Paris, and Sir Hubert, who owns Eynsleigh, is back from his latest expedition. It's time for Georgie to throw her first house party to celebrate his return and show off her new chef. The dinner party is a smashing success. Sir Mortimer Mordred—famous author of creepy Gothic horror novels—is one of the guests. He recently purchased a nearby Elizabethan manor nearby because it has a famous poison garden.

Miss the heyday of this series
Reviewed: 11-28-23
I am a big Georgie fan, have all the books! And the last few are just terrible. All of Georgie’s spunk seems to be gone. I’ve been recently relistening to some of the earliest in the series, with great plots and lots of twists, and humor! Which made this one fall especially flat. I feel like I just need to give up on these, but it’s hard to see it end.

Story
London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life: acclaim as an artist, a noble cause, marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman. Why, then, does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear into the hearts of Britain's peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she's stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions...

A great read, though heavier than first two

I have loved this series and found that this installment was just as a strong as the others, albeit this one had a more serious tone. I was a little afraid of the ending based on other reviewers, but I actually found it powerful and really identified with Hattie’s inner struggle on sense of self vs societal identity. Dunmore’s ability to weave in history was as masterful as ever.

New narrator detracted
Reviewed: 12-04-20
I’ve really enjoyed this series, but this switch in narrator was not great. I had a hard time following the story in parts due to the narration. Not the best installment, and I thought it rushed through the love triangle, given how slow and unsure things had moved previously. Nevertheless, I will look for the next installment.

I thought this was great! I really enjoy this series but found the last couple of installments a little tedious to get through. Not so with secret chapter. Loved every minute. I didn't mind the previous narrator, but I think the new one is a great fit.

Story
I was so excited when Darcy announced out of the blue that we were flying to Kenya for our extended honeymoon. Now that we are here, I suspect he has actually been sent to fulfill another secret mission. I am trying very hard not to pick a fight about it, because after all, we are in paradise! Darcy finally confides that there have been robberies in London and Paris. It seems the thief was a member of the aristocracy and may have fled to Kenya. Since we are staying in the Happy Valley, we are well positioned to hunt for clues and ferret out possible suspects.

Not the best in series

I found parts of the story intriguing and always like reading about new places, but the overall story lacked the spark that makes this series so fun. I read the kindle version first (couldn’t wait two months to not know what happened!) and I feel like the narrator did help the telling a tiny bit, but she seemed to do a better job in the last one. Hoping next year’s is better!

WOW. I have loved all of the Maisie Dobbs books, but there was something really special and compelling in how this was crafted. This is the best account of London life during the Blitzes that I've read. Masterful. This is my favorite since The Mapping of Love and War, and I was really overcome when the parallels between the two came together at the end. Now to reread this and Journey to Munich.

I read the whole series finishing just in time to listen to this addition when it was released. I think it might be my favorite yet! I am now sad to have to wait another year for the next one. It was different than the previous novels, being much more a mystery and taking cues from classic Agatha Christie. The social justice themes were a little lighter in this book than previously in the series as well, as well as coinciding historical events.
I don't understand the hate for this narrator. She does a fine job. I actually thought the narrator for the first book, Mr. Churchill's Secretary was hard to listen to/understand and was glad that a new narrator was picked up for the rest of them.
