Story
With her remarkable insight into the human condition and silences that contain multitudes, Elizabeth Strout returns to the town of Crosby, Maine, and to her beloved cast of characters—Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, Bob Burgess, and more—as they deal with a shocking crime in their midst, fall in love and yet choose to be apart, and grapple with the question, as Lucy Barton puts it, “What does anyone’s life mean?”

Absolutely beautiful!
Reviewed: 10-11-24
I have loved all of Strout's books, but this one is beyond special. After listening to this on Audible, I went immediately to our local bookstore and bought a copy so that I can continue to savor all the beautiful writing and insights that are so typical of Strout. This novel is profound. She writes what seems like an ordinary phrase or conversation, but it is so much more than that. This treasure of a book is heartbreakingly poignant.

This was a tender, heartwarming story of a mother and daughter during WWII in England. The love of books is, of course, an integral part of the story. It was a beautiful tale, superbly told. I loved it!

Story
After the teenage daughter of a prominent Minnesota politician goes missing, a huge manhunt is launched to find her. But when Cork O’Connor’s grandson Waaboo stumbles across the shallow grave of a young Ojibwe woman while hunting blueberries, nobody seems to care. Nobody, that is, except Cork and the newly formed Iron Lake Ojibwe Tribal Police Department. As Cork and the tribal officers dig into the circumstances of her murder, they discover a link to the missing girl that suggests these are not isolated incidents, but evidence of something much more sinister.

My least favorite of the Cork O'Conner series
Reviewed: 09-02-24
I have read all the books in this series and have rated them mostly as five-star novels. I kept losing my focus listening to Spirit crossing, needing to go back to hear what I had missed. There were too many insignificant characters, and the title was poorly chosen, as it was really just a side story to the main one about missing and murdered indigenous women. Also, as a nature lover, I missed Krueger's wonderful descriptions of the natural environment around Iron Lake in northern Minnesota which were not evident in this book.
Regardless, Krueger is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite authors, and I look forward to his next novel.

Certainly not "Charming and Uplifting"!
Reviewed: 07-12-24
I'm not a big fantasy reader, but I did enjoy this novel to some extent. I think the author did not tie several of the subplots together and, thereby, left the reader wondering. What was the significance of the tree? Who/what was Mrs. Bowden? Further, this story was far from "charming and uplifting".

Disappointing
Reviewed: 06-13-24
I am not a reality show fan, so the beginning chapters bored me. I was ready to return it until the story picked up and became a survival story for real. There were lots of questions left unanswered: What really happened to Dan? Why did Joel commit suicide? Why didn't they put an SOS on the sand immediately for planes to see? Many parts were totally unrealistic. Certainly not one of Ware's best novels, although I've enjoyed several of her others.

A Beautiful Love Story
Reviewed: 04-22-24
Amy Harmon is amazing! This love story between Butch Cassidy and a world famous singer is at once tender, heart warming and heart wrenching. Each character is drawn with precision, and with the understanding that people can be notorious outlaws and at the same time be good in other aspects of their character. I wish that I were as capable with words as Harmon because I can't begin to describe adequately how this book touched my heart. It is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read/listened to.

Willa Cather's books are all exceptional. I do not understand why a narrator with a British accent was chosen. These were stories of American pioneers, so I would have preferred an American narrator to depict the characters.

Lucy Sharpe is larger than life. Magnetic, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one, the careful one, always the sidekick and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe, and asks her to room together, something in Margot can't say no—something daring, or starved, or maybe even envious.

Very disappointing
Reviewed: 01-30-24
I loved her two previous books, but this one I had to push to finish. The characters were well developed; however, I didn't care about any of them. Margot, the protagonist, was pathetic. Her behavior and idolization of two friends were completely unrealistic.
I don't understand why the new format of back-and-forth in time is so appealing to writers lately. Why can't a story be told in a straight-forward manner anymore? I felt like a ping pong ball with all the "before" and "afters" in this book. I kept thinking in the "after" chapters that I had missed something, only to have it revealed later in the "before" chapters. It was confusing and left me feeling frustrated.
It was basically a coming-of-age story with a terrible ending. If you're new to this author, start with her first two books, which were terrific.
