About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes a sweepingly romantic tale of risk, redemption, and what happens when America’s most famous outlaw falls in love.

When infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy decides to go straight, he discovers that too many of the powerful men he crossed won’t let bygones be bygones. To have a chance at a new life, he’ll have to become someone else entirely.

A brief, fateful encounter with the celebrated singer Jane Touissant on the eve of his escape offers a glimpse of what might have been, but Butch disappears, leaving her behind, until their paths unexpectedly converge again in Paris.

Despite having discovered his true identity, Jane trusts the outlaw and enlists his protection on her upcoming American tour. Although Butch is reluctant to agree, fearing his sordid past may put the woman and her young son in danger, the salvation she offers is too hard to resist.

As they set forth on their journey, Butch’s past and Jane’s secrets put them at risk from threats far greater than the law, and this legend of the American West will have to decide what matters most—his life, his legacy, or the woman he loves.

Critic reviews

“Rob Shapiro immerses listeners in this historical fiction.… Shapiro invites listeners to envelop themselves in a world of European extravagance and the drama of the American West. Shapiro's deliberate pacing allows listeners to appreciate Harmon's masterful storytelling.”AudioFile Magazine

“The decision to imbue the Butch Cassidy myth with even more passion and intrigue certainly would have fallen flat if not handled with care. Lucky for readers that Harmon is up to the task.”Booklist (starred review)

“The period-piece aspects of the story are well-researched and convincing. This highly entertaining novel is a treat for lovers of the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: you can almost see Paul Newman’s charming smile as Noble Salt soothes Jane’s anxieties! Another fine read from Amy Harmon…”Historical Novel Society

A lovely fiction

I’m so used to reading historical books and historical fiction that is actually mostly historical, so this was a departure for me and took some adjusting to. Once I came to terms with almost nothing being historically accurate and just read it as a fiction novel, I really enjoyed it! Beautifully written and performed.

Emotional and sweet

One of Amy Harmon’s best. Emotionally riveting and with tears streaming down I still couldn’t stop listening.

SO good!

As always, both this author and this narrator did a marvelous job. The characters were brought to life in such a way, it was hard to put the book down. Excellent!

Great, narrator, great story.

I enjoyed the entire book start to finish. The narrator did a great job. I was so sucked into the story and even got emotional at times. I love that Amy Harmon uses facts in the story but also creates a story all its own. She’s fabulous at what she does!!

Butch

A little too much romance at times. The characters were so real that I actually got very attached to them. A pleasure to read - thanks

Loved reading a second chance novel with characters that were so broad and deep!

I loved this story, as everyone wants a believable love story to end well especially when we are bombarded with negative news daily

a moving story that would rival the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, but with a more satisfying ending.

I'd forgotten how much I like Amy Harmon's stories. it's been a year since I've read one. this one is among her best. Their desperate situation, their love, and their inner torment came across clearly on the page. The dialogue was sharp and entertaining. The settings and descriptions were spot on...and the story! If was so inventive! I would love to think that Butch Cassidy had a happy ending like this one.
