Story
At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy's change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence.

A new look at JFK for me
Reviewed: 09-11-24
So, I knew about JFK, he was a hero to my mom. I knew there were discrepancies in the investigation and that Oswald was a scapegoat. But the details in this book really gave me a new perspective on his death. And now I will have to read some more books to get the complete picture or to verify all the claims in this book.
It is very detailed, at some points the facts are repeated. Something the editor should have fixed. But overall I recommend this book.

Story
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

As many reviewers before me, what a great story. I think the setup is fantastic, the descriptions of the silo created a clear mind picture. Really nice story and I hope you will write prequel.

Let me just say that I am Dutch and was looking forward to this story. I have read other NS books. Love his in-depth description of the world he paints.
But…this book just needs a better editor. It is unfinished, unpolished, flat, lacks the compelling story I’d expect from NS.
The narrator did a great job, even tried to pronounce Dutch words ;)
The publisher should re-edit the book and add the great story that is hidden beneath the words.

Story
Machines That Think explores how artificial intelligence helps us understand human intelligence, machines that compose music and write stories - and asks if AI is really a threat. Sometime in the future, the intelligence of machines will exceed that of human brain power. So are we on the edge of an AI-pocalypse, with superintelligent devices superseding humanity, as predicted by Stephen Hawking? Or will this herald a kind of utopia, with machines doing a far better job at complex tasks than us?

This book gives a great introduction of artificial intelligence. It has a nice historical view. It unfortunately needs updating in the last years new tools made it in the hands of consumers. Giving them augmenting creativity tools, for text, audio, images, video and voices. All very realistic thanks to large language models and deep learning.

My new design hero
Reviewed: 01-11-23
Hartmut is a new design hero of mine. After the likes of Vignelli, Eames and Rams, Hartmut Esslinger is an unsung design hero. Of course, Frog is a well known design studio. Through this book I got to know Hartmut. Many subjects he shares and I do agree with his views. Innovation is a very overused word. And the majority of organisations think making a nice looking product is enough. But, they forget it's the complete experience. An example is the bike company Van Moof. The bike's design is great, slick, minimal, essential, industrial. But it lacks everything else, no service, low quality of bike parts, bad interaction with the bike and the organisation. Looks aren't everything. And Hartmut has many more examples. Great read, great lessons, great design, the complete package! Thanks for the insight Hartmut.

Story
Colleagues-turned-spouses Dr. Laurie Montgomery and Dr. Jack Stapleton already have their plates full with demanding forensic pathology work and family pressures. The last thing they need is the sudden death of a colleague. Yet when Laurie’s apparently vital and healthy longtime friend Dr. Sue Passero dies mysteriously in the hospital parking garage, an autopsy is required, and it falls uncomfortably under Laurie’s purview as the chief medical examiner. So when Laurie asks Jack to take special care with the case, he can hardly refuse.

I love the stories from Robin Cook about this pair. Over the years, this couple has grown in the books, now with kids, but still remaining true to the origin of the characters. Although I found this story to be a rerun of another book covering the same topic, it still captivated me. I found the ending of the book a bit dull, but it's a great story overall. Looking forward to the next Cook book ;)

Shocking story

A nice different Cook book with a compelling story you should listen to.
The story about the health system in the US being money driven shocked me more than the spreading of exotic viruses. Nor was I shocked about the turn of events at the end of the book. I was very sympathetic about it.
Sure, in Europe we have seen the Nile virus moving more North. But at least our medical system is still very much human. Although also in the Netherlands, insurance costs are rising, but mainly because of our older population.
