About this listen

Watch Silo, the new Apple TV+ sci-fi series starring Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Robbins, starting May 5th, 2023!

The first book in the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling trilogy, Wool is the story of mankind clawing for survival.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: they are allowed to go outside.

After the previous sheriff leaves the silo in a terrifying ritual, Juliette, a mechanic from the down deep, is suddenly and inexplicably promoted to the head of law enforcement. With newfound power and with little regard for the customs she is supposed to abide, Juliette uncovers hints of a sinister conspiracy. Tugging this thread may uncover the truth—or it could kill every last human alive.

So good!

Loved (mostly) the whole book and couldn’t put it down! There were some parts in books (acts?) 4 and 5 that felt incongruent with the rest of the book, but that’s likely more because of the sleep timer and less because of the author’s work. Thanks to @HughHowey for writing this very engaging book.

This is how a male narrator should portray female characters

I have a hard time listening to books with a male narrator having to portray female characters especially when one of the main characters is a woman. Usually it just sounds like a bad impression. This narrator does change his tone and inflection when portraying female characters but it is subtle and doesn't sound like he is trying too hard. He tells the story without overdoing it and does a great job giving characters a unique voice. I recommend the story too, but had a few issues with it. I think it was compelling but the dialogue kind of read like a YA novel. The concept is cool though.

Now I understand why Hugh Howey is a Master...

I can't believe I didn't listen to this sooner. Or read it when I came out some years ago. This is classic post apocalyptic Sci-fi down to its nitty-gritty, dirty core. I think Mr. Howey understands something about human nature that we are forgetting, and this book is a stark reminder. Narration is outstanding, the voices and characters clear and memorable. So, yeah. I just paid for the rest of the series and others written by Mr. Howey. As an aspiring writer myself, it's this kind of work that gives me the motivation and drive to continue to improve so that I, too, one day, can meet this level of storytelling. And yeah, I also renewed my Apple TV+ just to watch the series. Get this audiobook, listen carefully, enjoy and learn.

I liked it for the most part

I liked the story overall. The premise is great. I didn’t feel as connected to the main characters as I would have liked and so it took a while to finish it. Near the end it started to slow down quite a bit for me once I knew what was going on.

Entertaining take on a post apocalyptic world.

I really enjoyed this take on a post apocalyptic world that seems to be have run amuck. I started reading after watching the apple + series, but it’s very different than the series in that the tv series covers very little of the book so far. It’s hyper focused on the main character in the beginning of the book. If they stretch it out that way all the way through, it will take many, many seasons to cover it, which I guess is what they want.

A new speculative fiction CLASSIC

This book is so layered with all facets of human nature and the complexity of the situation that has been given to the people of the silo. The world building was top notch and naturally laid out.

My husband and I literally couldn’t get enough and bought the rest of the series.

a roller coaster!

I was intrigued by the Apple TV show, but since no one has Apple TV I decided to read the book. it has a really slow start but suddenly by chapter 20 it became a page turner. Though then by chapter 60 I was dreading reading the next page, and when I thought it got to its bleakest point it just ended. I was so shocked, but now I'm going on to the sequel. Please at least check this book out.

Amazing story!

Started watching on Apple TV and ended up getting the audiobook because I couldn’t wait on the episodes to come out. A gripping story from start to finish can’t wait to listen to the next in the series
