This book is set in Civil War times. But it is as far away from that struggle as it is close to it! The story of the individuals involved takes president - leaving the war in the background.
Very good reading, clean and free of profanity!

It is unsettling how accurate this is in describing our present time! Whereas I was thinking I’ll be home (heaven) before the rapture takes place I’m beginning to rethink that scenario I have to keep in mind that to the Lord “a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day” . Nevertheless I am thoroughly convinced that this Word is from the LORD!

Story
When Bruce Cowan takes his family and flees Boston to homestead out west, he figured the journey to California to be long but safe. Their first day out reveals how wrong he is and the perilous dangers of the Santa Fe Trail. It would have been a massacre but for Trent and Pat MacLeod. Trent favors a Sharps .50 caliber buffalo rifle, while his younger brother Pat packs two Texas Navy Colts. They both prove deadly and a force to be reckoned with. The Cowans and the McLeod brothers forge a bond those first few days, sustained in part by Trent's attraction to the 18-year-old Becky Cowan.

The narration was crisp with clearly distinguishable characters among the males, females, and children in the storyline so that the novel was not merely read but performed in a way that gave gravity to the novel. I am also grateful that the author was able to approach a variety of subjects without resorting to profanity or vulgarity. I think it’s worth 5 stars.

Mary MacLeod's mother died in childbirth when Mary was five, an event that marked for the child a "before time" - a lost joyful time - and after. She was shunted from one relative to another while her father coped with his grief. He married again only nine months later, perhaps to have a mother for his child, but her new mum, harsh and withholding of her love, quickly exerted complete control over her thoughts and deeds, with her father oblivious.

At first I thought this was a novel. Then I realized it to be a real life experience of a very lonely , unhappy little girl. I am glad that she is at last at a place where she can share her feelings angd perhaps cleanse her spirit of all those years of anguish .
As long as we are alive I think my God gives us an opportunity to prepare for HIM in a unique way that He does not give anybody else. In some passages this girl’s innermost feelings were very evident and disheartening!
Very well done.

This book deals with an area of Christian living that jolts us out of slipping into complacency . Even if we started out with that sharp edge of eternal focus and find ourselves drifting off in one way or another it gives us a wake up call so that we can "do the works that we did at first”
(Rev. 2:4-5)
or so that we can allow the Lord to release His Spirit into our lives to give us a new understanding and keep growing toward Him. I think that as long as we are alive we are not finished growing and learning.. It’s a very good reference for me to keep on hand.

In Stand, Marian Jordan Ellis shows what it looks like to be faithful in personal trials and a crumbling world. She addresses questions such as: How does the Christian leader share God's good news in today's culture? How do parents hold on to hope when their children are more in love with the world than with Jesus? How does a Christian battle the voice of shame? Stand explores the stories of people - from Scripture and from today - who chose to stand firm and "win life".

I love Christian fiction. I usually try to steer away from “romantic” novels per se however, this read handled that subject very well. I loved the easy going relationships of the characters and how well even the stressful points were portrayed. And especially the absence of profanity and unnecessarily toxic storylines.
