Story
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it's that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope - the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman....

Incredibly annoying delivery
Reviewed: 07-26-24
Unclear if the author thinks she’s an NPR host or some sort of spiritual guru. The way she ends her sentences is extremely strange and annoying. Authors love to think they should read their audiobooks, but let’s leave narration to professional narrators.

Story
From New York to Europe, the apartments of the nouveau riche to ancient French estates, Edith Wharton tells the story of Undine Spragg, a girl from a Midwestern town with unquenchable social aspirations. Though Undine is narcissistic, pampered, and incredibly selfish, she is a beguiling heroine whose marital initiation into New York high society from its trade-wealthy fringes is only the beginning of her relentless ambitions.

Absolute nightmare with headphones
Reviewed: 07-06-22
The narrator screams, whispers, and seemingly turned away from her mic half the time she recorded this. You will be adjusting volume the whole time

Story
It is September 1919: Twenty-one-year-old Tristan Sadler takes a train from London to Norwich to deliver a package of letters to the sister of Will Bancroft, the man he fought alongside during the Great War. But the letters are not the real reason for Tristan's visit. He can no longer keep a secret and has finally found the courage to unburden himself of it. As Tristan recounts the horrific details of what to him became a senseless war, he also speaks of his friendship with Will - from their first meeting on the training grounds at Aldershot to their farewell in the trenches of northern France.

Impossible to hear

The narrator does a good job… a little too good. He SCREAMS as generals and whispers as other characters. If you are listening on headphones, you’ll be adjusting the volume nonstop.

Secretly about Christianity

It’s a dark story and an interesting one, but unfortunately it keeps coming back to Christianity. The narration is good, and story will keep you engaged, but it weakens in the second half.

Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Examine your values, make sure they are good. That's about all you get from this book.
On a performance level, it's also rough. The reader's voice is near insufferable when he does impressions of other people throughout the book. With the douchey tone of the author's writing combined with these voices, he comes off as completely condescending
Read a synopsis, this isn't worth your money.
