Story
"Guns up!" was the battle cry that sent machine gunners racing forward with their M60s to mow down the enemy, hoping that this wasn't the day they would meet their deaths. Marine Johnnie Clark heard that the life expectancy of a machine gunner in Vietnam was seven to ten seconds after a firefight began. Johnnie was only eighteen when he got there, at the height of the bloody Tet Offensive at Hue, and he quickly realized the grim statistic held a chilling truth.

Heartfelt and sincere account of war
Reviewed: 12-16-24
The story shows a different tale of Vietnam that leaves out the cynicism that is inherent in so many other stories. These are kids and old vets, all seemingly real and relatable, living and dying in a far off land, isolated from the “world” they grew up in. They care for each other, show compassion and describe their fears, which leaves out the bravado and cockiness Hollywood likes to display. Great story of heavy combat, brotherhood and faith.

Story
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Story
In 1980, a freshman congressman was gunned down in Rhode Island, sending shockwaves through Washington that are still reverberating over four decades later. Now, with the world on the brink of war and a weakened United States facing rampant inflation, political division, and shocking assassinations, a secret cabal of global elites is ready to assume control. And with the world’s most dangerous man locked in solitary confinement, the conspirators believe the final obstacle to complete domination has been eliminated. They’re wrong.

Story
Con Thien was a United States Marine Corps firebase that was the scene of fierce combat for months on end during 1967. Staving off attacks and ambushes while suffering from ineffectual leadership from Washington as well as media onslaughts, courageous American Marines protected this crucial piece of land at all costs. They would hold Con Thien, but many paid the ultimate price. By the end of the war, more than 1,400 Marines had died and more than 9,000 sustained injuries.

Reviewed: 11-11-23
The men who served in northern I corps, specifically on the DMZ and more specifically on Con Thien fought a war unlike most all other units in Vietnam. The war on Con Thien was similar to a WWI or Korean War front. Not many Americans lived with the knowledge and daily reminder that the NVA could and did use heavy artillery in abundance on American forces, who were barred from going across the fence and wiping the enemy out. Tough, tough tough lives for those Americans. Also, Conan’s other book “Con Thien: The Hill of Angels” needs to be recorded for audiobook!!!

Story
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

The human experience, honor, duty devotion and courage are not politically exclusive. This story highlights the dichotomies of war and challenges preconceptions and prejudice towards “others”. The sheer amount of combat and the frequency the German airmen experienced danger and death in the air and on the ground is unrivaled. Outstanding story. Awesome listen.

On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

There is just so much you can do in a novel that can’t be translated into movie/TV form in the same way. I listened to this after watching the series. I really enjoyed the plot, the story, and all the characters in this book more than on screen. Good stuff! Hopefully the Hastings have a prime role in the next season on Amazon.

Story
One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

Story
Da Nang Diary is the story of how, in Vietnam, an elite group of Air Force pilots fought a secret air war in Cessna 0-2 and OV-10 Bronco prop planes - flying as low as they could get. The eyes and ears of the fast-moving jets who rained death and destruction down on enemy positions, the forward air controller made an art form out of an air strike - knowing the targets, knowing where friendly troops were, and reacting with split-second, life-and-death decisions as a battle unfolded.
