Heartfelt and sincere account of war

The story shows a different tale of Vietnam that leaves out the cynicism that is inherent in so many other stories. These are kids and old vets, all seemingly real and relatable, living and dying in a far off land, isolated from the “world” they grew up in. They care for each other, show compassion and describe their fears, which leaves out the bravado and cockiness Hollywood likes to display. Great story of heavy combat, brotherhood and faith.

Love the stories and detail. Having experience and a proficiency in the subject matter produces a much more significant and tangible element to the tales. The performance is great too.

The men who served in northern I corps, specifically on the DMZ and more specifically on Con Thien fought a war unlike most all other units in Vietnam. The war on Con Thien was similar to a WWI or Korean War front. Not many Americans lived with the knowledge and daily reminder that the NVA could and did use heavy artillery in abundance on American forces, who were barred from going across the fence and wiping the enemy out. Tough, tough tough lives for those Americans. Also, Conan’s other book “Con Thien: The Hill of Angels” needs to be recorded for audiobook!!!

The human experience, honor, duty devotion and courage are not politically exclusive. This story highlights the dichotomies of war and challenges preconceptions and prejudice towards “others”. The sheer amount of combat and the frequency the German airmen experienced danger and death in the air and on the ground is unrivaled. Outstanding story. Awesome listen.

There is just so much you can do in a novel that can’t be translated into movie/TV form in the same way. I listened to this after watching the series. I really enjoyed the plot, the story, and all the characters in this book more than on screen. Good stuff! Hopefully the Hastings have a prime role in the next season on Amazon.

I get so into all the Jack Carr novels, I hate it when they end. These stories keep you entertained and intrigued. Listen while working in my woodshop and have easily crushed the entire series in just over a week.

After reading many SOG bogs and listening to John Striker Myer on the SOG Cast and JOCKO podcast, it is great to get the perspective of the heroic and brave eyes in the sky. These guys weathered so much in the open and across the fence to save recon teams in trouble.
