About this listen

THIS GUT-WRENCHING FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT OF THE WAR IS A CLASSIC IN THE ANNALS OF VIETNAM LITERATURE.

"Guns up!" was the battle cry that sent machine gunners racing forward with their M60s to mow down the enemy, hoping that this wasn't the day they would meet their deaths. Marine Johnnie Clark heard that the life expectancy of a machine gunner in Vietnam was seven to ten seconds after a firefight began. Johnnie was only eighteen when he got there, at the height of the bloody Tet Offensive at Hue, and he quickly realized the grim statistic held a chilling truth.

The Marines who fought and bled and died were ordinary men, many still teenagers, but the selfless bravery they showed day after day in a nightmarish jungle war made them true heroes. This new edition of Guns Up!, filled with photographs and updated information about those harrowing battles, also contains the real names of these extraordinary warriors and details of their lives after the war. The book's continuing success is a tribute to the raw courage and sacrifice of the United States Marines.

The War

I’m 76. My first boyfriend was stationed in DaNang as a medic in the 60s, while I was in high school. My brother, in the same Navy medic program, was assigned to the rehab hospital in Yokosuka Japan. Both young men came home damaged by the war. They adjusted & healed some. My brother became a career Naval Officer, retired after 30 years, I think. My first boyfriend married someone else and he was an OR nurse as a civilian. Sadly, he passed away. Needless to say, reading this book was like listening to an old friend. Thx, Johnnie Clark. PS - My brother & boyfriend never discussed the war with me.

Genuine, raw, and Christian

The reader talked too slow, put it on 1.2x for a better experience. The story is amazing.

The people

My father served in the Marines in Vietnam at the same time as this story. I have a little better understanding of his experience, thank you for writing this book.

Gripping Combat Account of Marine in Vietnam

This was a starkly described account of a Marine M60 gunner in the Vietnam War. Although it is a partially fictionalized account, it is based on first-hand experience and describes actual battles. It describes the long-endured field conditions and combat that drive a person to the psychological condition described as combat fatigue and PTSD as well as the role that comradery and deeply-held religious belief can play in keeping men from completely breaking down under the chronic fear, stress and fatigue.

The Robotic inhuman narration of an AI generated voice.

A real disservice to have this incredible story narrated by an AI generated voice. Shame on Penguin Randomhouse for posing this bot as a legitimate narrator.
