About this listen

THIS GUT-WRENCHING FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT OF THE WAR IS A CLASSIC IN THE ANNALS OF VIETNAM LITERATURE.

"Guns up!" was the battle cry that sent machine gunners racing forward with their M60s to mow down the enemy, hoping that this wasn't the day they would meet their deaths. Marine Johnnie Clark heard that the life expectancy of a machine gunner in Vietnam was seven to ten seconds after a firefight began. Johnnie was only eighteen when he got there, at the height of the bloody Tet Offensive at Hue, and he quickly realized the grim statistic held a chilling truth.

The Marines who fought and bled and died were ordinary men, many still teenagers, but the selfless bravery they showed day after day in a nightmarish jungle war made them true heroes. This new edition of Guns Up!, filled with photographs and updated information about those harrowing battles, also contains the real names of these extraordinary warriors and details of their lives after the war. The book's continuing success is a tribute to the raw courage and sacrifice of the United States Marines.

Johnnie telling you, without having to say it, God shows up. Every single time.

The Truth is, God never left. But sometimes, God has to shake you awake sometimes. God did that for these Marines, just as he does for everyone. Whether or not we’ll acknowledge it when God does it, is up to us. I’m a Marine. I experienced nothing, not one second in my time in service in Iraq like Johnnie or any other combat troop in Vietnam did. But, I bet I’ve spent more time feeling sorry for myself than these men did. This book struck a cord with me. While reading it, I consciously decided to change my life. Wake up and listen. God is speaking to us all the time. I’m just not listening. And instead of feeling sad over losses, I’m going to start feeling grateful for what I have. Start being grateful for my life. It’s a gift. Squandering it with endless days feeling sorry for myself is pathetic and a total waste. That ends right now.

Semper Fi Marines.
Thank you LCPL Clark.

Some of the bravest men

I noticed another used did the same as another reviewer has. Set the playback speed to. +1.2x and it will instantly bring the Ai's reading voice to a real life like narration. The slower speed seems to leave out the emotion from each characters descriptions that are actually there. Not a negative word to say, this book was absolutely flawless. These men did not get the credit they fully deserved upon their arrival back to "The World". Thank you all for your service. If anything, more people should read these legends and possibly a chance of helping it repeating itself. Thank you all for your service.

Absolutely Phenomenal.

My father served in the Marines in Vietnam at the same time as this story. I have a little better understanding of his experience, thank you for writing this book.

The people

I’m 76. My first boyfriend was stationed in DaNang as a medic in the 60s, while I was in high school. My brother, in the same Navy medic program, was assigned to the rehab hospital in Yokosuka Japan. Both young men came home damaged by the war. They adjusted & healed some. My brother became a career Naval Officer, retired after 30 years, I think. My first boyfriend married someone else and he was an OR nurse as a civilian. Sadly, he passed away. Needless to say, reading this book was like listening to an old friend. Thx, Johnnie Clark. PS - My brother & boyfriend never discussed the war with me.
