Mixed feelings on this one
Reviewed: 11-26-24
I only really had one issue with this book. Murphys distrust of Dresden just felt so forced and often didn't make any sense. Because that affected the plot so heavily it really dragged the book down for me personally. I did still enjoy it by the end but some parts were rough.
The recording is a bit better this time. There's still some mouth noises that I'd prefer the mic didn't pick up. Performance wise I really enjoyed it though. It seemed like he grew into the character just a bit more this book.

Decent start

There was a bit too much lip smacking noise in the performance for my liking. I definitely think it'd be better if they were to trim those noises out. Some lines I felt like they were being read for the first time. There were a handful of awkward pauses I noticed that made it seem like he needed to read what was supposed to come next. I did like the performance though overall and it sounds like it gets better as the books go on.
As far as first books in a series goes, I thought this was pretty good. I was never bored or struggling to get through it. I guess my only complaint is it felt like there were a lot of moments of tension that felt forced. Maybe some of it would be more believable if I knew more about Dresden's past but with the info I had a lot of things just didn't add up.

Story
In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

I'm still eager to get into book 2 but this first book was just hard for me to follow along and i found myself forcing myself to listen to it. I never really felt a moment where I didn't want to put it down.

Mage Errant: Publisher's Pack contains books one and two of the Mage Errant series: Into the Labyrinth and Jewel of the Endless Erg. Hugh of Emblin is, so far as he's concerned, the worst student that the Academy at Skyhold has ever seen. He can barely cast any spells at all, and those he does cast tend to fail explosively.

I picked up this series after seeing it mentioned by Andre Rowe on one of his blogs and instantly fell in love. I'm onto book 6 at this point and for the first time in a while find myself nearly losing sleep thinking about what might happen next and convincing myself I can stay up to listen to just one more chapter.
If you liked Arcane Ascension this should be right up your alley. Ralph Lister nails the performance as well. I thought he had a great variety of voices that really helped differentiate between characters and really added personality to each. I'll definitely be looking for other series voiced by him.

I almost didn't pick this one up because of some of the negative reviews but I am glad I decided to anyway. The magic system is very interesting. I was always eager to listen to more.
