I think I enjoyed the reader of the first volume more, but overall this book is absolutely amazing for anybody who enjoys history and wants to better understand the absolutely insane rollercoaster of the third reich and Hitler. I’ve read the Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich by William Shirer (which I also highly recommend) and while I find both of these books as being similar in many ways I think this one benefits from having more time and documentation to reflect on. William Shier wrote his masterpiece in 1960, and while that is able to benefit from many first hand accounts (including his own experiences) he didn’t have the resources we have now. Many documents have been released after the collapse of the Soviet Union which helps give us great insight. The many long term repercussions of the Second World War can also be examined now that it’s been roughly 80 years. Overall a great historical insight that I highly recommend.

Why I can definitely say it’s not what I expected the book to be, I can also say that it was a very good listen. Most of lessons to be learned in this book seem to be universal no matter what you may be doing in life. The insight into what goes on behind the scenes on some of these deals is fascinating and at times frustrating. Listening to this book makes me fully understand how and why Trump got into politics. Whether you like the man or not I would still recommend getting this book. The insight into how his mind works is extremely interesting , especially considering that this was written 30 years before his run for office. The area around media in particular was incredible to hear. It brought a ton of clarity into everything he’s been doing for the last few years. His relationship with the media clearly being in the forefront of his mind well before he ran for office. His tactics and ability to manipulate the media also being very obvious, even using the same tactics then as he does now. If you have any interest into business or Trump himself this is definitely a very great book to read.

When I first approached this audio book I was nervous to even begin it due to its length, but as I got towards the end of the book, realizing there were only 10 hours left, I was left wishing it could be longer. This book is so thorough and objective, yet told in a way that is very digestible to anybody, even if they have the smallest knowledge about nazis and the grotesque characters that formed it’s foundation. A warning is definitely warranted though, as this book is not for the faint of heart. The depths that these horrendous leaders went to in order to cause the suffering of humanity are almost unbelievable. I found myself at parts of this book, particularly in regards to the holocaust chapter, to be physically squeamish. I forced myself through these parts, no matter how hard it may have been to hear, as I believe it necessary for every human to know what these poor souls had to go through under the absolute most unjust circumstances. I hope that people listen to this audio book for generations to come, so to better understand how and why such scenarios arise to bring about the most cruel periods of humanity and to better understand how to avoid it in our present moments.

The well explored deep insights into this war gave me many moments of enlightened knowledge. I’ve explored the topic of WWII many times, and although My overview of the war was good, this book helped bring out the deeper meaning and designs behind many of the decisions of this war. The great use of historical context and simple, yet powerful narratives help illustrate so many important areas of this war. I appreciate the way he manages to discuss all the characters and countries that had a role in this war and their thinking before, during and even their goals for after the war. how they applied many of their decisions usually either helped, or damned their efforts and this is written about extensively in a very interesting yet easily understood way. This is especially impressive given the many different goals of each country and their leaders, which you would expect to be a very complicated and nuanced subject (which it is), but is written and discussed about in a manner that is very interesting and doesn’t leave you at all confused about the situation at hand. I would highly recommend to anybody who has a love for WWII or global politics.
