Rushed, awful narration
Reviewed: 12-31-23
The story was rushed, some parts weren’t elaborated on enough and just felt like parts of the story were missing. Also, the narration was awful. Sounded like a robot a lot of the time. This could have been done better.

Story
Under the Trestle is the true story of the most compelling murder case in Virginia history. In 1980, Gina Renee Hall, a Radford University freshman, went to a Virginia Tech nightclub on a Saturday night. She was never seen again. Her abandoned car was found parked beneath a railroad trestle bridging the New River, with blood in the trunk. The investigation led police to a secluded cabin on Claytor Lake, where there was evidence of a violent attack. Former Virginia Tech football player Stephen Epperly was charged with murder, despite the fact that Gina's body was never found.

As someone else mentioned, the narrator’s inflections were irritating and also singsong. A great book/story though.

Story
David Parrish was in disbelief when he learned that 19-year-old Jon Bowie's body had been found hanged from a backstop at the local high school's baseball field and the death declared a suicide. David had known Jon and his twin brother since they were boys. He had coached them on the baseball field and welcomed them into his home for sleepovers with his own sons. However, when David learned how Jon's body was found, he felt compelled to find the facts behind this incomprehensible tragedy.

I was waiting the entire book for something to happen. I was stunned when it abruptly ended with a real ending. You have to sit through a whole lot of psychic non-sense and it leads nowhere. The narration was fine for me, I liked it. The story itself is heartbreaking and I do think there was a major police coverup but this book goes on and on about nothing.

Whiny, Privileged
Reviewed: 05-27-23
I could not get through this book. The incessant whining while living a glamorous, privileged life was just too much. Everyone goes through heartache and failed marriages, but not everyone deserves a book deal because of it. The author clearly got the book deal by being connected. Worse than that, the writing was poor and the narrative repetitive. The author fails to convey and true introspection and passively aggressively blames her ex husband for their failed marriage. The cherry on top was the overly dramatic narration by the author. Go ahead and pass this one up. Yikes.

Great Read
Reviewed: 01-22-23
At first I was afraid that this book would be non-stop details of horrific abuse, but I’m glad that was not the case. I’m too empathetic to listen to it for too long. This book does have some of that, but mostly it’s a story of triumph and redemption, with a great storyline. Don’t pass this one up.

Mostly summarizes trial
Reviewed: 12-17-22
I was disappointed in this one. I was hoping for more inside details about the trial, but this is mostly a summarization of parts of the trial. Some of the back and forth between Martinez and Arias was tiresome to listen to, especially since I watched the trial back in 2013. I also feel like some parts were very drawn out, while others were rushed. Don’t get me wrong, I am a supporter of Martinez and I think he put on a great prosecution in this trial, but this book fell short for me.

Kate and Dan make a final effort to identify Dorrough's third, unidentified, victim. What they learn forces them to look again at the way they’ve told this story. They go back to the beginning and, in this telling, Dorrough's story is more normal and at the same time, much more troubling. Dan accepts that he can never see the world in the same way again.

Good listen
Reviewed: 09-19-22
This was an overall good listen. Throughout the podcast, they are attempting to identify the third person that was killed, however, it’s seems pretty obvious to me that the third person whom he was referring to was the man he had run over and killed. That was the only frustrating part for me. But other than that, it’s worth a listen.
