I believe that the clarity in which Sr. Anastasia presents the dangers of alternative religion will find itself a resource just as useful as St. Paisius the Young Man and the Guru.

Smith could have effectively told the same story in a more succinct fashion. River God was long but engaging throughout this however became tedious in many places. Also I don’t believe this is really book two in the series.. it makes more sense as book 3.

The author seems to have a habit of repeating himself unnecessarily. Several times I found myself thinking I heard these points already as if I had somehow gone backwards in the book, it was almost as if the author copy and pasted himself in several places.

I have listened to many CIA/Covert ops books. Most of these books seem to be stuck in the 8p’s and most of their narrative comes from Cold War declassifications. This book is nothing like them, Annie does an excellent job of showing special ops through the Global War of terror doing it through the riveting narratives of a few legendary actors.

Overall Good Book. Narration Leaves Something To Be Desired

I mostly enjoyed this book but it took me a long time to adapt my ears to Martha’s voice, once I adapted I think I managed to follow along. There were quite a few times where she modulated her voice in order to express emotion and I was left thinking that is weird so the way she envisioned the emotions of the characters was much different than I did as the reader. The story was generally good though and she provided a good macro view of the war. While she by no means neglected the view from grunts on the ground I would have liked to have heard more from their perspective.

My biggest takeaway is the author should probably stick to writing and leave the narration to the professionals.

This book paints a very vivid picture of middle age life in Russia. While it is fiction I think the author has created an accurate portrait of the simple beliefs of Russian Orthodox peasants and the Fools for Christ and Elders of the Middle Ages. I am sure I will listen to this again and again.
