Story
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (German for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism - but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

I wasn't ready. I am so happy that Lale chose to share his story, so full of heartache, terror, but also love, friendship, and determination.
I hope people will choose to hear this story, to learn from it and others like it because those who are ignorant of the ast are destined to repeat it.

Story
Ever since she was a child, every aspect of Julia Haart’s life—what she wore, what she ate, what she thought—was controlled by the dictates of ultra-Orthodox Judaism. At 19, after a lifetime spent caring for her seven younger siblings, she was married off to a man she barely knew. For the next 23 years, her marriage would rule her life. Eventually, when Haart’s younger daughter, Miriam, started to innocently question why she wasn’t allowed to sing in public, run in shorts, or ride a bike without being covered from neck to knee, Haart reached a breaking point.

Having Ms. Haart narrate her own book was, in my opinion, the only way to go. Her story is so amazing and the emotion you can hear in her words leaves you feeling like you can truly know this unapologetic woman. I am still waiting to see if there is anything she can't do! Except maybe reach the top shelf, but with her shoes she can probably do that too! Her determination is contagious. I will absolutely be recommending this book to every woman I know and probably men too. There's a message in this story for everyone.

Based on a true story, this debut Civil War novel follows a Southern plantation woman's journey of transforming her home into a hospital for the war. This debut novel is based on the true story of Carrie McGavock. During the Civil War's Battle of Franklin, a five-hour bloodbath with 9,200 casualties, McGavock's home was turned into a field hospital where four generals died. For 40 years she tended the private cemetery on her property where more than 1,000 were laid to rest.

I usually listen while I'm cleaning or something similar, but for the last couple of chapters, I had to sit.
This story gripped me within the first couple of chapters. It made me angry, sad, and joyful. To me, that is what makes an excellent book. The voice actors did a fantastic job bringing the book to life in my imagination, feeling the emotions in their voices.
Highly recommended!

If you like psychology, this is a good book for you.
The plot is a little hard to follow at first, but hang in there. The reason for the lower stars is because the ending was abrupt and didn't really give a lot of closure. Overall, I enjoyed the quick listen.

Based on exclusive and unrestricted access to more than 5,000 pages of personal writings and family photos, this definitive biography of German physician and SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Josef Mengele (1911-1979) probes the personality and motivations of Auschwitz's "Angel of Death". From May 1943 through January 1945, Mengele selected who would be gassed immediately, who would be worked to death, and who would serve as involuntary guinea pigs for his spurious and ghastly human experiments (twins were Mengele's particular obsession).

I am a huge history buff, however this narrator reminded me of my high school history teacher - monotone and robotic sounding.
I couldn't even make it through the first 5 chapters before I realized I had completely tuned out the annoying sounds in my ear holes!

My First Agatha Christie Novel
Reviewed: 11-23-20
I fully understand how Ms. Agatha Christie's writings are classics. A woman way ahead of her time, the main character is not only adorable but she is daring and adventurous! Before I even realized it I was sucked in, a great mystery with many plot twists but a quick and surprising love story. The narrators did an excellent job of bringing each character to life and giving them personality.
