About this listen

Agatha Christie's debut novel was the first to feature Hercule Poirot, her famously eccentric Belgian detective.

A refugee of the Great War, Poirot is settling in England near Styles Court, the country estate of his wealthy benefactress, the elderly Emily Inglethorp. When Emily is poisoned and the authorities are baffled, Poirot puts his prodigious sleuthing skills to work. Suspects are plentiful, including the victim’s much younger husband, her resentful stepsons, her longtime hired companion, a young family friend working as a nurse, and a London specialist on poisons who just happens to be visiting the nearby village.

All of them have secrets they are desperate to keep, but none can outwit Poirot as he navigates the ingenious red herrings and plot twists that earned Agatha Christie her well-deserved reputation as the queen of mystery.

HELLO POIROT!!!!

Agatha Christie, the worlds greatest mystery writer introduces the eccentric & amazing Inspector in this debut novel full of richly described, but numerous characters & suspects. You will likely need the accompanied PDF file which comes along with this book to keep them all straight in your head. It was a bit mind boggling remembering who was who but it was well worth it. Richard Armitage is one of my favorite narrators. He brings them all to life. This is a great listen. Don’t miss it! I hope this is helpful.

Well Told Story!

I'll have to admit the reason I picked this Audible book was because of the narrator, Richard Armitage. I've seen him in movies, I love the man's voice, his accent, his acting. And I remember reading Agatha Christie novels when I was in high school (50 years ago). Finally, I'd seen a movie based on one of her mysteries, Murder on the Orient Express, so I thought I'd give 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles" a listen to. I was not disappointed. Richard's voice changed easily from character to character... I never lost my place as a listener as to who was speaking to whom. I was completely drawn into the story, which I listened to every night before I fell asleep, and during my 1-2 hour walks outside. I thought I had guessed who the killer was, but I knew Agatha Christie's penchant for leading the reader off the trail, so I'd try to reason why it would be the least likely suspect. I loved the depth of her characters, I sympathized with each one of them, even the ones who appeared to be villainous, right up to the end. I don't usually turn to a mystery as my choice for a good read (I am a SciFiction and Fantasy reader), but Richard Armitage's narration drew me to this book, and I was glad to have become an Agatha Christie fan once more. Well done to everyone who made this book happen!

Free Included Audio - very Satisfied

I am familiar with the television productions of Hercule Poirot by David Suchet. This audio was every bit as enjoyable. The narration by Richard Armitage was very good. I was entirely satisfied & May purchase my own copy.

I really enjoyed this particular narrator.

Agatha Christie stories are always a joy to go back to, the way she spins the details and whodunnits still make me smile and enjoy the books no matter how many times I’ve already read them.
This narrator in particular did an excellent job with the accents and differentiating between the characters with ease. They’re all smoothly done and easily recognized for who is talking, I’ve listened to enough narrators to appreciate this one. He’s on par with THE David Suchet for my favorite Christie narrator now, I actually like his smooth vocal performance a little more than Suchet’s for an audiobook -though I adore David Suchet on screen as Poirot.

Great Listen - Phenomenal Narration

Richard Armitage does a wonderful job capturing the spirit of Hercule Poirot’s first outing! This is a worthwhile listen, especially given its price!

Richard Armitage does a masterful narration

I have been a big fan of Agatha Christie since I was a girl, but up to now I never had listened to an audio book version of any of her stories, primarily because I enjoy reading books more than listening to them. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this audio rendition of the story. Richard Armitage has masterfully recreated a slee of characters. His performance is so skillful that you would swear it were more than one person performing. It was like listening to a play or a movie. Highly entertaining. i definitely would recommend any of his other audio books if they are as good as this one.

Agatha for the win

Christie is a master of misdirection! Armitage does a great job pacing the book, and makes a great stab at Poirot.
