Story
For the first time in 10 years, Freya is back in the little village of Middlemass for Christmas. The streets might be twinkling with fairy lights, but after the recent loss of her mother, she's never felt less festive. Forced to sleep under the same roof as her handsome neighbour Finn, Freya realises she's going to need a distraction—fast! So she sets herself a challenge: to cook the '12 Days of Christmas'. Her delicious food soon brings the villagers together, and as each day passes, old friendships are renewed, memories stirred and there's even the flickering of romance.

Another wonderful tale from Poppy Alexander

Another precious story with some familiar characters. Deep into the life of someone facing grief, it was very moving at times. But I appreciate the lightheartedness and life-goes-on attitude that bolsters Freya and friends throughout.

The story was going so well, but I had to stop almost halfway in. All the detailed sex scenes aren’t my thing. I listen to audiobooks at home with my family members sometimes walking about. It got a little too steamy! I might try to listen to the rest later, with headphones.

Story
For children’s book author Imogen, an idyllic life in the English countryside seems like the perfect fit for her and her husband. But when tragedy strikes, Imogen is left widowed, and finds herself moving into Storybook Cottage alone with only her monstrously narcissistic cat for company. After discovering she is pregnant, Imogen grows determined to embrace a new start in Middlemass, with its duckpond, cricket matches and village fêtes. The only thing Imogen can’t seem to shake is her neighbor—a brooding, artisan blacksmith named Gabriel—who she can’t quite decide is friend or foe.

Story
In the northernmost reaches of Scotland, where a string of little islands in the North Sea stretches towards Norway, lives Gertie MacIntyre, a proud island girl by birth. Her social circle is small but tight: family and friends, particularly the women in her knitting circle. In the whitewashed cottages of their hometown, everyone knows everyone, and the ladies of the knitting circle know more than most. In a place of long dark winters and geographic isolation, the knitting circle is a precious source of gossip, home, laughter, and comfort for them all.

Steamy and romantic
Reviewed: 11-10-23
I love Cressida McLaughlin and have read many of her books. I wasn’t prepared for the steaminess of this one. I often listen to my audiobooks on speaker while I’m cooking cleaning, etc. I had to turn the volume down on this one to shield my family from the drool-worthy descriptions of Jake! Not super complex but a very cute romance, with characters who are overcomers.

Story
Christmas comes early—far too early—to McCredie’s little Old Town bookshop in Edinburgh. It’s summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie’s is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows? Carmen Hogan, the bookshop’s manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up.

Laughing out loud! I never do that!
Reviewed: 09-14-23
I’m only halfway through this book and I’ve already embarrassed myself a dozen times by laughing out loud in public with my headphones on. Witty, lonely, late-20-somethings thought processes are hysterical. Brought me back a couple decades. Although I usually go for sweet English countryside stories, I really needed a cute book that would make me laugh! This hit the spot. Thanks as always Jenny Colgan!

As the keeper of this vital lifeline, Morag is used to landing on pale golden beaches and tiny grass airstrips, whether during great storms or on bright endless summer nights.
