A decent bargain

This audiobook offers good value for money, but for those who want a production with better sound quality and fewer slips of the tongue I'd recommend one of the pricier choices.

Story
Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

Beautifully read (and sung!)

This is a 60 hour-long delight, magnificently read by Frederick Davidson (aka David Case), one of the best narrators ever, who will be sorely missed. It is truly amazing how vividly he renders this doorstop of a novel -- the elaborate descriptions, the multiplicity of voices, and the songs. He does a pretty good French pronunciation, too!

Story
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

I highly recommend this unabridged reading of Dickens's classic. The narrator does an excellent job.

It's a good collection, beautifully read -- but it does NOT include "The Dead," as the blurb promises.
