About this listen

Madame Bovary is the first novel by French novelist Gustave Flaubert.

The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, a bored provincial housewife, who abandons her husband to pursue the libertine Rodolphe in a desperate love affair.

Attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors when it was first serialized in La Revue de Paris between October 1, 1856 and December 15, 1856, it became a best seller when it was published as a book in April 1857, and is widely considered a masterpiece of realism literature and one of the most influential novels ever written.

Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880) was a French writer who is counted among the greatest Western novelists.

A decent bargain

This audiobook offers good value for money, but for those who want a production with better sound quality and fewer slips of the tongue I'd recommend one of the pricier choices.

An Enjoyable Listen

This was a rather casual reading of Madame Bovary, with page turning and occasional sips of water evident on the narrator's end. This did not detract from the enjoyment of this classic book.

Not worth it

What disappointed you about Madame Bovary?

Madame Bovary disappointed me about Madame Bovary. Thought her character was selfish, wasteful and the major problem with society. She had everything but didn't see it and gave up on herself and others.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would like to have seen Mr. Bovary stand up to her and not let her get away with so much. He really couldn't have been that blind. I also would like to have seen Madame Bovary pay for her actions. Wish their daughter would have somehow told her off or something.

What didn’t you like about John Richmond’s performance?

I enjoyed John Richmond's actual performance, but had such a hard time hearing him most of the time that I feel I missed some parts. His hushed tones were really quiet. The quality of the recording left a lot to be desired as I was listening to the book in my car, through the speakers and had to have it on max and STILL had a hard time hearing when I went above 30. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book made me angry and embarrassed to be of the same gender as someone so self-centered and lazy.
