Story
Newly returned from finishing school, Lady Juliette Thorndike is ready to debut in London society. Due to her years away, she hasn't spent much time with her parents, and sees them only as the flighty, dilettante couple the other nobles love. But when they disappear, she discovers she never really knew them at all. They've been living double lives as government spies-and they're only the latest in a long history of espionage that is the family's legacy.

Story
Peter Mayle and his wife had been to Provence as tourists. They had dreamed of one day trading the long, grey winters and damp summers of England for the blue skies and sunshine of the coast of southern France. And then they made it happen. They moved into an old farmhouse at the foot of the Luberon mountains and embarked on a wonderful, if at times bewildering, new life.

Story
King Stephen's bloody siege against the town of Shrewsbury has reduced many of its stores and homes to rubble. The townspeople, busy preparing for the annual St. Peter's Fair, complain that the Shrewsbury monks have not shouldered their fair share of the burden. Cadfael, hoping to assuage flaring tempers, is drawn into a worse kind of violence on the eve of the festival.

one of the best Cadfael stories
Reviewed: 11-15-18
This is one of the best and most rich Cadfael stories. It's important to get the unabridged version (this one) as some of the sweetest moments and nuances of dialogue are cut from the other (with Derek Jakobi).

If you could sum up A Quiet Life in the Country in three words, what would they be?
Wonderful performance. The story lagged in places... but it also sparkled often. Plenty of witty dialogue and opportunities to guess at the clues the two intrepid and charming sleuths discover together... I loved it. I was sorry when it was over.
What about Elizabeth Knowelden’s performance did you like?
She reminds me of a female version of the great Cadfael narrator Patrick Tull: able to draw you in, make you feel the atmosphere, and to somehow give each character its own voice and quality... you get swept away. Very well done.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes - BUT - please don't abridge anything! I listened to it over a weekend and that was perfect.
Any additional comments?
More please!
