About this listen

King Stephen's bloody siege against the town of Shrewsbury has reduced many of its stores and homes to rubble. The townspeople, busy preparing for the annual St. Peter's Fair, complain that the Shrewsbury monks have not shouldered their fair share of the burden. Cadfael, hoping to assuage flaring tempers, is drawn into a worse kind of violence on the eve of the festival.©1981 Ellis Peters (P)1992 Recorded Books, LLC Historical Thriller & Suspense Mystery Fiction Suspense

What a great story, masterfully read.

With a great climax what a fantastic ride. I immediately started this one over again right after I finished it. I can't wait for the next one.

enjoyable if unmemorable

a fun listen if a little over long. not as complex as the two prior mysteries but the backdrop and the characters are always engaging. plot takes a while to develop and by the end the denouement is not very surprising. narration is first rate.

Patrick Tull is a wonderful narrator

I've just finished a third listen to this book, and Patrick Tull makes it a delight.

Hugh Beringar isn't in Shrewsbury, so Cadfael has to deal with another of the Sheriff's men, one is looking for a quick arrest and easy solution to the murder of one of the merchants who have come to the annual fair. We begin to see how the new abbot will deal with Shrewsbury and with Cadfael, and how even the fair is affected by the conflict between Stephen and Maude.

Highly recommended.

Always a good read or listen.

Cadfael, like the mounties, always gets his man or woman or priest. Everything is fine in the end.

Another excellent performance

A little more complex than some of the previous ones, which was a nice surprise. Masterfully written.

Patrick Tull is the star!

For the stories Edith Pargeter (Ellis Peters) created around Brother Cadfael he is the perfect reader. Together they bring us the everyday life and the Benedictine attitudes and reverence of the early Middle Ages. I enjoy listening even a second time— rare for me.
