Story
Sam Johnstone was hoping for renewal when he took a job at a boutique law firm in rustic Wyoming. The mountains and streams of the West would be a refreshing, quiet place to start over after years of war and turmoil in his personal life. But after a local woman is brutally murdered, Sam realizes that things aren’t so quiet in this rural American town. The accused is one Tommy Olsen, a known delinquent who had been sleeping with the victim. Sam is repulsed by the crime and wants nothing to do with the case but meets with Tommy to make sure he has legal representation.

Story
Los Angeles, 1916: Photographer Bill Ogden has opened a portrait studio in the seedy noir world of early Hollywood, where he is joined by his granddaughter, Flavia—a woman in need of a fresh start after bludgeoning her abusive husband to death in Wichita. Though his business is mainly legit, Bill finds himself brushing up against the “blue movie” porn industry growing in the shadows of the motion picture mainstream. When a series of grisly murders take place across the city, Bill and his capable granddaughter are pulled into events as tricky and tangled as anything this side of The Big Sleep.

the first question i would pose to mr. phillips is rhetorical- “did you have a happy childhood or are you funny”? he’s an exquisite wordsmith and i laughed out loud throughout. mr. ganser’s performance was seamless, as if he wrote the words himself. every character was voiced so wonderfully his talent is unmatched imo.

Story
Mike Kovacs is an economics professor, who's trying to get over a bitter divorce. He’s barely on speaking terms with his only child. And he’s just killed two bicyclists in an inebriated hit-and-run at a deserted Michigan beach. (In his defense, he hadn’t meant to get that drunk. And what’s the use of getting caught and going to jail if it means you can no longer make positive contributions to society?)

There will be dark humor
Reviewed: 10-23-23
Tandem is jarringly realistic in the emotions it evokes by characters as written and readers alike. Fear, trepidation and sadness to name a few. But the pick me up is the use of dark humor by the author. It succeeds in a well written, balanced and nicely plotted novel!
