Story
Mountain search-and-rescue volunteer Bree Loewen's to-do list isn't quite the same as most people's. A former Mount Rainier climbing ranger and trained leader in mountain search-and-rescue, Bree shares the drama and the camaraderie of this work, as well as the challenges of trying to fit her other roles as wife and mother into what is still largely a masculine environment. In a fearless voice - disarming yet laced with dark humor - Bree guides us through intense recoveries, vivid wilderness landscapes, and the warmth she discovers in motherhood, community, and purpose.

Disappointed

I don’t often leave poor reviews of books. I made it half way through the book without anything worth taking away, I stopped there, no need for me to go further. In my opinion this book is about a woman who hates being female and complains about being a female in every aspect of her life as if it were only women who have ever struggled or faced hardships.

Story
Like thousands of restless men left unmoored in the wake of the 2008 economic crash, Michael Patrick Smith arrived in the fracking boomtown of Williston, North Dakota, five years later homeless, unemployed, and desperate for a job. Renting a mattress on a dirty flophouse floor, he slept boot to beard with migrant men who came from all across America and as far away as Jamaica, Africa, and the Philippines. They ate and drank together, argued like crows, and searched for jobs they couldn't get back home. Smith's aim was to find the hardest work he could - to find out if he could do it.

After 1 year you’re only starting to figure that part of the oilfield out. Great book overall but feel like his main reason for going was to write a book about it but honestly appreciated that a liberal went out and experienced the life rather than writing a book about the horrors of the oilfield without actually experiencing it first hand. Thank you for that.

Severe hypocrisy

Great idea for a story, however the author goes on and on about how ignorant and close minded everyone but himself is. Yet he was just as guilty of his own extreme biases without honest thought and evaluation.

A few years later, she left her job, her marriage, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into those mountains. In her new memoir, Heather shares her distinct message of courage - her willingness to turn away from the predictability of a more traditional life in an effort to seek out what most fulfills her.

The 20+ hour repetitive takeaway point that this book drives home is that men are bad, and that women are poor helpless victims. The book goes to great lengths to show men as monsters and the many possible ways that men could be victimizing women. My hopes in purchasing this book was to further explore human nature and gather a better understanding on how I have been controlled and manipulated in the past. However what I was bombarded with instead of science was non stop misandry.

In my opinion the liberal agenda was lay’d on a little to thick. At the beginning I had the feeling that she was oppressed by being female and throughout the book until the final chapter when suddenly the father now on his death bed was finally a positive influence on her life.

Story
American society has become anti-male. Men are sensing the backlash and are responding. They're dropping out of college, leaving the workforce, and avoiding marriage and fatherhood at alarming rates. The trend is so pronounced that a number of books have been written about this man-child phenomenon, concluding that men have taken a vacation from responsibility. But why should men participate in a system that seems to be increasingly stacked against them?

Story
An updated and revised edition of the controversial classic - now more relevant than ever - argues that boys are the ones languishing socially and academically, resulting in staggering social and economic costs. After two major waves of feminism and decades of policy reform, women have made massive strides in education. Today they outperform men in nearly every measure of social, academic, and vocational well-being. Christina Hoff Sommers contends that it's time to take a hard look at present-day realities and recognize that boys need help.
