I literally suffered thru this as long as I could. When I couldn't take it anymore, I skipped to the end! What a waste of time. I can't believe King allowed his name to be associated with this ridiculous, boring, lack of characters story.

Not her best
Reviewed: 12-14-23
I have read everything Thrity Umrigar has published and absolutely enjoyed immersing myself in her well-written words. Not so much with this story. Well, to be fair, the story was pretty good, but I objected to some of the political statements that were not needed, and I felt the author was getting her "digs" in and touting the Obama presidency. The political references almost made me mad enough not to finish. But, alas, I did. The story was just okay, not her best.

Story
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

I tried several times, but I cannot finish this. It started okay, but I kept losing the storyline. I surrender because I don't want to go backward with this just so-so book. I can't punish myself any longer with this.

I was disappointed in this, and I hope to be the final book in this series. The main character, Ratha, was so incredibly annoying. She was not a strong character; she was wishy-washy, fainting, breaking out into a sweat, and wiping her hands on her clothes. Annoying! I'm not used to that by Alka Joshi. I would have never followed the storyline if this character had been in her earlier works. Also, it was almost predictable. You know how it's going to end and I abhore sappy books. I almost stopped listening, but I had finished 2/3 of the book. Ugh. It was not a complete waste of time, but my time could have been spent with another.

Story
The master at his scarifying best! From heart-pounding terror to the eeriest of whimsy - tales from the outer limits of one of the greatest imaginations of our time! Trucks that punish and beautiful teen demons who seduce a young man to massacre; curses whose malevolence grows through the years; obscene presences and angels of grace - here, indeed, is a night-blooming bouquet of chills and thrills.

Don't start with Will Patton
Reviewed: 11-09-23
I listen to anything, I mean anything, narrated by world-class Will Patton. Unfortunately, this book started with a terrific story narrated by Will Patton and it was an on-the-edge-of-your-seat story. And then it ended and a new narrator began - no good. So I skipped to the next story by yet another narrator - no good. So, I cut to the next story by yet another narrator - no interest. These narrators are famous actors, Matthew Broderick, Paul Giamatti, etc., OMG, I couldn't get through any of their narrations and the stories fell flat. Stephen King - don't start your book with Will Patton; the rest of the stories will be boring. Also, King's new book "Holly" - is NOT narrated by Will Patton, and anyone who knows "Holly" knows that Patton does a superb job bringing Holly to life so I won't be listening to that book, but it may be worth an actual book read.

I can't believe how incredible this book was, I actually cried. The characters are so sad and loving and mean and cruel and you want to understand why people behave the way they do and once you understand that you get a better idea of why people do the things they do. This is my first listen to Margaret Lukas's beautiful writings and I will begin Book 2 immediately. Rich in details and complex characters.

I was on the waiting list for Ms. Hawker's 3rd novel and I am within 10 minutes to the end and am dreading it. I love this story, the characters, and complexities of family, religion, and characters trying to "fit" into a religious small town where everybody knows everybody and everybody is expected to behave a certain way. In comes a stranger, everyone knows she is for the city and is thereby labeled as such. All she wants is to have what she perceives as happy, healthy family structures. No one knows what happens behind closed doors. You either love or hate some of the characters which is a sign of a good writer whereby she evokes such passion into the characters both positive and negative. If you haven't experienced the works of Olivia Hawker, you are in for a feast. But be forewarned that you will hungrily look forward to devouring everything she has written. Each and every book she has written has such detail as to draw you into the story and you won't want it to end.
