About this listen

River People is a powerful novel with unforgettable characters.

In Nebraska, in the late 1890s, 17-year-old Effie and 11-year-old Bridget must struggle to endure at a time when women and children had few rights, and society looked upon domestic abuse as a private family matter.

The story is told through the eyes of the girls as they learn to survive under grueling circumstances. River People is a novel of inspiration, love, loss, and renewal.

Great story

This was really disheartening, but do easy to believe. Great story from beginning to end, and well told.

Very good listen

I love books written about times gone by and this book shares things about how hard women were treated in a time gone by. The story line depicts the suffrage many women had to endure

perfection

these are words that tell a story from so long ago, yet feel relatable to some my life experiences as a woman. they are addictive words, so poetic they paint the picture and feelings that go with it! just wonderful. will listen again.

Give the animals a break

I enjoyed this book; however, I would have enjoyed it better if there wasn’t so much animal abuse. It really was unnecessary and makes me wonder if the author just hates all animals.

Great listen!

River people is a tale of how strong people we can be in the midst of hardship and how we find different ways to cope. I love how well the Margaret Lukas builds some unusual characters so that you feel like you know them. It starts out a little slow but stay with it, I finished this book and looked for more by Margaret Lukas.

Great book about women’s hardships

This was a really great, some times hard to hear book about survival, heartache, and times during the the late 1800’s. Enjoy.
