Story
In January 2023, bestselling author Johann Hari started to inject himself once a week with Ozempic, the diabetes drug that produces significant weight loss. He wasn’t alone—credible predictions suggest that in two years, a quarter of the U.S. population will be taking this class of drug. Proponents say that this is a biological solution to a biological problem. While 95 percent of diets fail, the average person taking one of the new drugs will lose a quarter of their body weight in six months, and keep it off for as long as they take it.

So informative while also told with compassion and raw honesty. I love all Hari’s books and wish they were taught in schools.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Fun story
Reviewed: 02-25-24
The world they created is fascinating and a great premise for a story. However while I know younger people ( especially ones with something to prove) have a lot of angst, this protagonist always sounds angry. That gets pretty old and I guessed the storyline pretty quickly. But overall very entertaining when you want something light to listen to in the background.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. While Rothfuss insists he didn’t use stories or events from his own boys, you can hear the love for kids in this writing more than ever.
Wonderfully written as always.

I love his writing and feel like you really get to know the characters. But I listened to this after I listened to Midnight Library and it didn’t come close. There were some profound insights in the last chapter but lacked the level of depth Midnight Library has.

Did I miss something?

If you are looking for a coming of age Christian romance novel this is for you. A notable woman of history and I’m glad someone is telling her story. This could have been so much better. The flirtations with her friend’s husband and secret letters do not support the protagonist’s high moral character, The immaturity of anyone who’s feeling are hurt at the idea their slave might choose freedom over staying out of loyalty was surprising. I think it is understandable a slave would naturally choose freedom.

I so love the other books by Natalie Haynes that I didn’t hesitate to try this. While this narrator was good and so was the story, I didn’t rate this higher because I guess I am used to her fabulous voice, meaty information and witty humor. This was worth listening to but I still love her others much more.

This is my third book by Natalie Haynes. Besides being very entertained by great story telling and narration, I am relearning the classic stories in my middle age. They never appealed to me when I was younger, but hearing them from this fresh perspective has changed everything.

Story
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.
